{"id":5730,"date":"2013-04-26T17:44:43","date_gmt":"2013-04-26T17:44:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=5730"},"modified":"2013-04-26T17:44:43","modified_gmt":"2013-04-26T17:44:43","slug":"englands-culture-secretary-warns-of-testing-times-in-an-age-of-austerity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=5730","title":{"rendered":"England\u2019s Culture Secretary warns of \u2018testing times\u2019 in \u2018an age of austerity\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Maria Miller, England\u2019s Secretary of State for Culture Media &amp;Sport, gave her first major culture speech at the British Museum on 24 April, providing a warning that the arts would not be treated a special case in terms of the forthcoming Comprehensive Spending Review.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She encouraged all \u2018to get a proper grasp of the economic impact of culture\u2019 asking for help in \u2018reframing the arguments to hammer home the hidden values of arts to the economy\u2019. One new element was the emphasis she put on the international impact of our culture, in soft diplomacy and in developing the trade deals of the future.<\/p>\n<p>To help her make the case to Treasury, she concluded: \u2018My call to you as arts and cultural leaders then is simple.
