Historic town and city centres across Scotland are to benefit from over \u00a310 million worth of funding from the Scottish Government.<\/span><\/p>\n

The funding, which is distributed through Historic Scotland\u2019s Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) will see 12 council areas allocated funding from the scheme which encourages local authorities to invest in their historic environment, whilst helping to stimulate economic regeneration.<\/p>\n

Historic Scotland writes<\/span>:
\nCabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop, made the announcement on Tuesday 29th January 2013 as she visited one of the areas which has benefited from previous CARS funding in Dalkeith.<\/p>\n

Dalkeith was awarded \u00a3402,638 in the 2nd Round of CARS funding in 2008. Since then the funding has provided improvements to the streetscape on the High Street, repairs to several key buildings including the Tollbooth and the Cross Keys Hotel, a former coaching inn, and small grants to home owners and shop keepers.<\/p>\n

The Cabinet Secretary met with the Project Leader and representatives from the local council and was able to view first hand how the funding has been invested back into the area.<\/p>\n

The Cabinet Secretary said: \u2018It has been a great privilege to see first hand how this investment programme is continuing to benefit communities such as Dalkeith across Scotland. Our historic environment plays a key role in communities and this funding provides an opportunity to invest back into the historic fabric and back into the heart of communities. It also crucially provides the opportunity to stimulate economic regeneration, a key priority in today\u2019s economic climate, be that through a new end use or rejuvenating an existing facility. I am delighted to announce a further \u00a310 million of funding for communities the length and breath of Scotland, which will give more areas than ever before the opportunity to benefit from this investment.\u2019<\/p>\n

The areas which are included in this round of funding are:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Kirkwall, Orkney Islands Council
\n\u2022 Elgin, Moray Council
\n\u2022 Kilbirnie, North Ayrshire Council
\n\u2022 Falkirk, Falkirk Council
\n\u2022 Parkhead Cross, Glasgow City Council
\n\u2022 Banff, Aberdeenshire Council
\n\u2022 Selkirk, Scottish Border Council
\n\u2022 Kirriemuir, Angus Council
\n\u2022 Galston, East Ayrshire Council
\n\u2022 Cupar, Fife Council
\n\u2022 Gorebridge, Midlothian Council
\n\u2022 Inverarary, Argyll and Bute Council<\/p>\n

Since 2005, there have been four CARS application rounds. The funding, which is allocated to local authorities by Historic Scotland is available to provide financial assistance for area based regeneration and conservation initiatives.<\/p>\n

Open to Local and National Park Authorities, community groups and other third sector organisations delivering multi-funded projects it can be utilised for a number of purposes from priority repairs and small grants to homeowners and retailers, to providing traditional craft training opportunities.<\/p>\n
