{"id":5366,"date":"2013-02-01T16:15:17","date_gmt":"2013-02-01T16:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=5366"},"modified":"2013-02-01T16:15:17","modified_gmt":"2013-02-01T16:15:17","slug":"ironbridge-gorge-ranked-uks-top-world-heritage-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=5366","title":{"rendered":"Ironbridge Gorge ranked UK\u2019s top world heritage site"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire has been voted the UK\u2019s best UNESCO world heritage site by the TripAdvisor traveller community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution 300 years ago, Ironbridge Gorge came top of the list ahead of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney in the Orkney Islands, Scotland, and the Ruins of Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire, which both came second and third respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Ironbridge Gorge still fascinates to this day with world\u2019s first cast iron bridge \u2013 built over the River Severn in 1779 as well as 10 museums spread along its banks and a host of other attractions.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Les Sparks, Chairman, Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site Steering Group said: \u2018This is a worthy tribute to the warm reception visitors receive from local businesses and residents of the Ironbridge Gorge, which complements the exceptional beauty and history of the area\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on this massive boost to the local visitor economy, Telford &amp; Wrekin Councillor Clive Elliott, lead member for Tourism added: \u2018We are incredibly proud of the heritage represented by the Ironbridge Gorge and delighted that it has been recognised in this way.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It attracts visitors from all over the globe and we\u2019ve worked very hard to protect, support and promote the area which has now been recognised on the international stage.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The partnership between TripAdvisor and UNESCO\u2019s World Heritage Centre launched in October 2009 to raise awareness of and gain travellers\u2019 support to preserve natural and cultural sites inscribed on UNESCO\u2019s World Heritage list.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1.1 million traveller feedback forms were collected in partnership with UNESCO, making this the largest study of its kind ever conducted.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Travelbite News<\/span>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelbite.co.uk\/travel-news\/2013\/01\/14\/ironbridge-gorge-ranked-uk-s-top-world-heritage-site\" target=\"_blank\">LINK<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire has been voted the UK\u2019s best UNESCO world heritage site by the TripAdvisor traveller community.
