{"id":5240,"date":"2013-01-04T16:58:54","date_gmt":"2013-01-04T16:58:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=5240"},"modified":"2013-01-04T16:58:54","modified_gmt":"2013-01-04T16:58:54","slug":"government-publishes-street-clutter-guidance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=5240","title":{"rendered":"Government publishes &#8216;street clutter&#8217; guidance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The government has claimed that more than 9,000 traffic signs have been taken down in England in the last year as it published new guidance aimed at reducing &#8216;street clutter&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The BBC writes<\/span>:<br \/>\nMore than 9,000 road traffic signs have been taken down in England in response to a drive to remove \u2018unnecessary clutter\u2019 in cities and rural areas.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers praised local authorities in London, Hampshire and Somerset for axing \u2018confusing and ugly\u2019 signs and urged other councils to follow suit.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2011, ministers lifted the requirement for certain road signs.<\/p>\n<p>The government plans to give councils more discretion over where they place signs, with new rules expected in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers have warned that excessive signs can be a distraction to motorists and make roads appear \u2018unattractive\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Following a review last year, the Department of Transport is highlighting councils in England which they say are \u2018leading the way\u2019 on removing superfluous signage.<\/p>\n<p>In London, it says 8,000 \u2018red repeater\u2019 signs &#8211; designed to reinforce no stopping or loading messages such as double red lines &#8211; have been taken down.<\/p>\n<p>It said research suggested that motorists already had a clear understanding of what red route marking meant and extra signs were not necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, 200 signs have been removed from a twelve mile stretch of the A32 in Hampshire while 1,000 signs have disappeared from Somerset.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">BBC UK News<\/span>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-20901026 \" target=\"_blank\">LINK<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Search Planning Resource<\/span>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planningresource.co.uk\/planningdaily\/gated\/1165407\/\" target=\"_blank\">LINK<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">See the guidance at<\/span>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/reducing-sign-clutter\" target=\"_blank\">LINK<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government has claimed that more than 9,000 traffic signs have been taken down in England in the last year as it published new guidance aimed at reducing &#8216;street clutter&#8217;.
