Five things we learned from fresh data’

The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government has released updated survey data on how resilient English homes are to extreme weather, and reports on five things learned by new NESTA analysis by Charlie Meyrick.

Charlie Meyrick for NESTA writes:

Lesson 1: The share of homes experiencing overheating in England has almost doubled over the past five years…

Lesson 2: The number of homes reporting overheating is now about the same as the number reporting being unable to keep warm in winter – but these issues present differently depending on tenure…

Lesson 3: Building type is a key determinant of weather resilience.

Of the 3 million dwellings reported as overheating in 2024, 2 million are constructed with cavity masonry walls, 667,000 have solid masonry walls and 309,000 dwellings have other less common wall types. Overheating is more prevalent in dwellings with steel frame (18%), timber frame (15.8%) and cavity masonry walls (12.8%) compared with concrete frame (9.4%) and concrete boxwall (5.5%)…

Lesson 4: Much of this variation could be down to construction type, which also affects weather resilience…

Lesson 5: Passive cooling is still by far the dominant coping strategy in hot weather…

…

What does this mean for our mission to decarbonise and electrify homes? The way many people are heating and cooling their homes is not working in extreme weather. Too many people will face health impacts from over- or under-heating, and the unsuitability of many English homes to extreme cold means millions are living in fuel poverty. In response, the UK government should continue its electrification mission at pace….

Read more here

See the updated survey data

The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government has released updated survey data on how resilient English homes are to extreme weather, and reports on five things learned by new NESTA analysis by Charlie Meyrick.

[5

post-47725","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-sector-newsblog
["GET
