The sector is deeply embedded in local property markets, local supply chains and employment markets. The economic value of heritage stems from various sectors and subsectors; from archaeology and conservation, to hospitality, construction, and public services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each year, Historic England commissions a detailed economic study that aims to capture the economic &#8216;footprint&#8217; of the heritage sector using national statistics disaggregated into subsectors, occupations and local geographies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using the latest available national statistics (2023), England&#8217;s heritage sector is estimated to have contributed \u00a339.9 billion in gross value added (GVA)\u2026 to the English economy in 2023 and supported over 546,000 workers. The provisional estimates for 2024 mark a slight decline in GVA (to \u00a339.4 billion) and an increase in aggregate employment to 559,000 compared to 2023 levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">England&#8217;s heritage sector\u2019s direct contribution to the England&#8217;s GVA in 2023 stood at \u00a315.9 billion. This is expected to face a slight decline to \u00a315.7 billion in 2024 provisional estimates. The 2023 GVA figure is equivalent to 0.75% of England\u2019s total GVA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>England&#8217;s heritage sector supported \u00a339.9 billion in 2023 when considering the combined effects of the direct GVA (\u00a315.9 billion), indirect GVA (\u00a315.8 billion) and induced GVA (\u00a38.2 billion) contributions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provisional figures for 2024 are \u00a339.4 billion when considering the combined effects of the direct GVA (\u00a315.7 billion), indirect GVA (\u00a315.6 billion) and induced GVA (\u00a38.1 billion) contributions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When comparing this sector to other sectors, the heritage sector performs well. Using 2023 direct GVA figures, the heritage sector comes second after the sports sector with \u00a317.49 billion. The arts sector is valued at \u00a38.45 billion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overall, for every \u00a31 of GVA that the sector directly generates, an additional \u00a31.51 is added into the wider economy.
