An RTE News Documentary follows its analysis on derelict buildings in Ireland: Watch \u2018RT\u00c9 Investigates: Left to Rot\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

A grey, boarded-up bungalow sits in Newtown, Doonane, a small rural village\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2024, the building was added to the local authority’s derelict sites register, a mechanism designed to pressure owners to tackle dereliction through annual levies\u2026 in this case, the council ultimately chose not to apply the levy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2026 one of approximately 2,500 sites on the 31 local authority derelict sites registers. Most\u2026 privately owned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But an RT\u00c9 Investigates analysis has found that State bodies appear repeatedly on the registers\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In other words, while one arm of the State is tasked with addressing dereliction, others are contributing to the problem\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Around three years ago, RT\u00c9 Investigates began submitting information requests to local authorities to obtain complete copies of these registers, so that we could undertake an in-depth analysis\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
