As the government looks at the future of regulating the built environment, we have set out our approach to ensure a competent built environment profession. Our proposals for reform are set out in three steps: repeal, reserve, regulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
REPEAL the Architects Act<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Architects Act 1997 is the current legislation that regulates the use of the title \u2018architect\u2019 in the UK. This does little to ensure competence of the profession and therefore, it is ineffective and should be repealed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
RESERVE defined activities to suitably competent professionals<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead?a new piece of legislation for the built environment should be introduced which would set out exactly which suitably competent (chartered) professionals were able to undertake reserved activities, which include?submitting?full planning applications, building control applications and final compliance certificates.?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
REGULATE through a Built Environment Council <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government should create a Built Environment Council. This new Council would oversee the construction industry chartered professional bodies who would assess the competence of individuals.?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
