{"id":4592,"date":"2012-08-17T14:59:11","date_gmt":"2012-08-17T14:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=4592"},"modified":"2012-08-17T14:59:11","modified_gmt":"2012-08-17T14:59:11","slug":"civil-servant-to-lead-national-trust-dame-helen-ghosh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=4592","title":{"rendered":"Civil servant to lead National Trust: Dame Helen Ghosh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Dame Helen Ghosh has been announced as the new director-general of the National Trust, replacing long-time leader and fellow Dame, Fiona Reynolds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dame Helen, currently permanent secretary to the Home Office, has had a long career in the civil service, with a significant spells working on environmental issues with the Department for the Environment and Defra.<\/p>\n<p>The new director-general is said to be a \u2018long-term member\u2019 of the National Trust, and also of the Wildlife Trust in Oxfordshire \u2013 her local organisation. ??Dame Helen takes the reigns from Dame Fiona who has overseen significant growth at the Trust over her 12-year tenure. The organisation now has more than four million members, and 67,000 volunteers \u2013 a figure just shy of the army of Olympic \u2018Games Makers\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Dame Fiona, winner of the Outstanding Leadership award at this year&#8217;s Charity Awards, announced her departure from the National Trust in March and will take up her new post as Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, next year. \u2018I\u2019m delighted by Helen\u2019s appointment,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>Dame Helen similarly said she was \u2018delighted\u2019 with her appointment and in following in her predecessor&#8217;s footsteps, taking up the new role in November. \u2018I have been an admirer of the Trust and its work all my life, and I am thrilled that I have been given the chance to be part of its future,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing the theme of joy at the appointment there, chairman Simon Jenkins said: \u2018The board is delighted that Helen will be the Trust\u2019s director-general.
