{"id":45700,"date":"2026-02-24T16:13:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T16:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=45700"},"modified":"2026-02-23T09:56:42","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T09:56:42","slug":"ihbcs-director-joins-riches-programme-board-honoured-of-course-but-mostly-im-impressed-by-the-80m-of-research-opportunities-for-historic-and-built-environment-conservatio-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=45700","title":{"rendered":"IHBC\u2019s Director joins RICHeS Programme Board: \u2018Honoured, of course, but mostly I\u2019m impressed by the \u00a380M of research opportunities for historic and built environment conservation\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Sean_OReilly.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Sean_OReilly.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45662\" style=\"width:213px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Sean_OReilly.png 500w, https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Sean_OReilly-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Sean_OReilly-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>IHBC Director and Chief Executive Dr Sean O\u2019Reilly has been appointed to the Programme Board of the UK\u2019s Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.riches.ukri.org\/\">RICHeS<\/a>),&nbsp; helping to oversee the \u00a380m programme of investment in Conservation and Heritage Science infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>IHBC President Rebecca Thompson said: \u2018After a great start to 2026 with the award of an OBE to IHBC\u2019s Chair, David McDonald, this more fantastic news from the IHBC leadership.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Dr Se\u00e1n O&#8217;Reilly, has been invited to join the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riches.ukri.org\/\">RICHeS<\/a> Programme Board.&nbsp; RICHeS is an \u00a380 million investment to deliver a nationally&nbsp; distributed network of research infrastructure for heritage science and conservation research across the UK.&nbsp; RICHeS&nbsp; coordinates access to facilities, collections and expertise, and connects&nbsp; UK researchers to major international infrastructures in this field, notably through their role as the UK National Node for&nbsp;European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science (E-RIHS).\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018This is great news for Se\u00e1n, and for the IHBC, particularly as it aligns so with our core corporate objectives.&nbsp; It is also a great leadership message for all IHBC Members: to think about our Continual Professional Development and how we can professionally develop our careers, and have a positive impact for the Institute and for the heritage sector more widely.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018So join with me in congratulating Se\u00e1n, and let\u2019s reflect on this wonderful start to the year.&nbsp; We live in exciting times for the IHBC!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IHBC Chair David McDonald OBE said: \u2018This is yet another great boost for the IHBC, my warmest congratulations to Sean for his achievement. This can only add to the Institute&#8217;s status and help boost its progress on the Petition for Charter.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Se\u00e1n O\u2019Reilly said: \u2018I\u2019m of course at once honoured and delighted to have been invited to help in the oversight of this critical programme of research funding. But most of all I am hugely impressed by the scale of the work, the allied investment, and the huge ambitions and opportunities on offer for all our conservation and heritage interests\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018RICHeS describes itself as \u2018the UK\u2019s Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science, a long-term \u00a380?million commitment from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), supporting excellence, collaboration, and innovation in heritage and conservation science.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018And while RICHeS may not be familiar to many of our members or core networks just yet, soon it will be!&nbsp; Already it has invested in 31 projects across the UK, and has a rolling Access Fund \u2013 its first call \u2013 is now open, and itsHeritage Science Data Service (HSDS) catalogue of services and data is also now available for use.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018It also has its own strong infrastructure \u2013 a great team of leads, experts and managers, a growing network, a substantial body of work behind it and dedicated funding for the future.&nbsp; So it is the strongest possible position to carry our the ambitious programme of work assigned to it, ultimately, by the Treasury.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018That progress already represents a huge investment, but even then it could be only a part of what could be secured through cross-sector interdisciplinary engagement with the programme.
