{"id":44970,"date":"2025-12-30T16:03:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-30T16:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=44970"},"modified":"2025-12-30T13:21:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-30T13:21:10","slug":"ihbc-features-heritage-from-the-he-doorstep-19-remarkable-historic-places-listed-by-historic-england-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=44970","title":{"rendered":"IHBC features \u2018Heritage from the (HE) doorstep\u2019: 19 Remarkable Historic Places Listed by Historic England in 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Storm_Tower_Bude_Nilfanion_Commons_Wiki.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Storm_Tower_Bude_Nilfanion_Commons_Wiki.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36121\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em><sub>image for illustration: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Storm_Tower,_Bude.jpg\">Bude Storm Tower<\/a> by Nilfanion, <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/3.0\">CC BY-SA 3.0<\/a> , via Wikimedia Commons<\/sub><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historic England are looking back over 2025 and celebrating 19 unusual historic buildings and places that have been granted protection in England over the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Historic England writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are looking back over 2025 and celebrating 19 unusual historic buildings and places that have been granted protection in England over the past year.&nbsp; The sites highlighted this year range from a Neolithic burial mound dating to 3400 BC in the Yorkshire Dales to an exceptionally rare shipwreck lost in 1903 known as the Pin Wreck in Dorset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year \u2018Dragon\u2019s Teeth\u2019 Second World War anti-tank defences in Surrey have been protected, as well as rare dockside equipment in Greenwich linked to major technological advances in undersea telecommunications which laid the foundations for today\u2019s subsea optical cables that transmit internet traffic worldwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other highlights include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A rare working smock mill in Kent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Neolithic burial site in the Yorkshire Dales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A distinctive tower in Cornwall known as &#8216;the pepperpot&#8217;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A well-preserved historic shop in Cambridgeshire, which was a specialist in Norwegian ice skates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A visionary university building in Manchester<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Three cast-iron guideposts in Cheshire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A beautifully designed school for girls in Birmingham<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Heritage Minister Baroness Twycross [said] \u2018Britain\u2019s heritage is as varied as it is brilliant, with each of these buildings playing a part in shaping our national story over the centuries. This year alone we have protected 199 heritage sites, from neolithic cairns in the Yorkshire Dales to the fabulous Catholic Cathedrals in the heart of Liverpool. I\u2019m proud that we\u2019re safeguarding our rich history so future generations can continue to enjoy it.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Claudia Kenyatta and Emma Squire, Co-CEOs Historic England [said] \u2018These newly protected places demonstrate the remarkable diversity of England&#8217;s heritage. They connect us to the people and events that shaped our communities.
