This round, more than ever, demonstrates the increasing variety of roles that employers are looking to us to for help to fill, and the many ways we try to help conservation skills and outcomes, as we have no posts with ‘conservation’ in the title.’

‘The recent success in our Petition for Charter exploration centres on permission from the Privy Council Office to Petition for a Charter, as noted HERE. That formally registers at least the credibility of our case for our ‘unique’ and ‘interdisciplinary’ conservation profession.

That means that this round I am actually delighted to highlight what I think is a unique moment in our NewsBlog updatesfrom our Jobs etc service: the first time we have round of job posts with no title including the word ‘conservation’. Crucially, this doesn’t mean we don’t have conservation in the roles – far from it – it only means that the skills that our members have are, increasingly, recognised as critical core skills for many roles beyond core conservation practice.

‘As regular readers of these NewsBlogs know, career opportunities on IHBC Jobs etc. typically range widely across sectors, skills, employers, locations and roles. However all reflect a common objective and strategy: in order to secure the person they need, employers target IHBC members, their skills and our wide-ranging networks. That only reflects the role the IHBC’s model of conservation skills and competence – our Conservation Cycle – plays in assessing the competences, and the potential, of candidates.’

‘This round posts include titles and terms such as Heritage, Archaeology, Landscape, Biodiversity, Design, Townscape and more that headline the roles, but no ‘conservation’. As noted, there are reasons to be proud of this broad inclusivity – presuming it doesn’t happen too often – especially with the initial charter review behind us to give confidence. In essence, this round offers an entirely independent confirmation of a point that has pervaded these NewsBlog updates: that the IHBC offers a truly unique and firmly interdisciplinary reach, access and relevance to all users, beyond the conservation professional.

Indeed just as the legislative infrastructure and policies differ across countries – as I noted in my last update – so too this week we can see that practices and principles vary across disciplines. Yet the IHBC’s conservation accreditation model and linked interdisciplinary services and standards remain relevant across all because they are underpinned by commonly-recognised international practice standards, notably through our Conservation Cycle model. Clearly, our Jobs etc service is very special – just check out the terms and benefits on the site! But it’s our practice standards, and their unique and fundamental interface with interdisciplinary practices, that means the service actually is relevant to start.’

‘With the current round of posts also marking an another uptick in opportunities for our IHBC member networks, I am delighted to highlight again our direct financial support for conservation posts on our service. And I’m continuing our particular focus on charity jobs and employers, a user group to which we offer our most generous subsidies, from c.25%, and that’s only to start!’

Charity employers this round that could access the 25% advertising fee subsidies by offering conservation-led roles include Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust’s call for a Principal Historic Buildings Officer, and the Canal & River Trust for a Heritage Advisor. They job titles don’t mention conservation itself, but the reduction recognises the fundamental place of charitable objectives and public benefit in the enhancing conservation outcomes.

Interestingly as regards value for money, for any charity our Jobs etc costs for advertising projects are easily justified, even before the reductions! This is because the service addresses the priorities in transparent and credible appointment processes and so secures those critical risk management benefits that trustees’ must always register in their decisions to pay to find the right person for the job!

Church bodies advertising directly with us also can access these same 25% charity-linked reductions without the need for a ‘conservation’ title in the post. Those qualifying this round include call from St Cuthbert’s Church, Darlington for a Project Manager (client side); the Diocese of Leeds for a Net Zero Church Buildings Officer and Salisbury Cathedral offering a Freelance Archaeologist Opportunity.

The IHBC’s subsidised support for conservation doesn’t end with charities and church bodies though. Subject to job titles, job descriptions and skills requirements, we also offer subsidies of up to 10% for ‘jobs specifying conservation roles and accreditations’. These reductions can be accessed by both public and private sector employers.

Clearly these incentives have limited applications of the 10% reduction for ‘conservation’ job titles or accreditations this round, as none apply!

But with the right specification of conservation accreditation roles and skills, jobs with a more general heritage focus also can qualify for some reductions, typically 5%.

So across public and private sectors we can see opportunities for 5% reductions in advertising costs for Cardiff’s Principal Heritage Officer (Planning) and Planner (Heritage); both East Suffolk’s and Monmouthshire’s Heritage Officer roles; Malvern Hills & Wychavon’s Assistant Heritage and Archaeology Officer and Leeds’ Team Leader – Heritage, Landscape and Biodiversity.

And for the private sector the reduction is open to Donald Insall Associates’ Senior Heritage and Townscape Consultant role; Stephen Levrant’s Senior Built Heritage & Townscape Consultant and HCUK Group’s Heritage Consultant – Associate Director.

A post not qualifying for these skills-based reductions, but nonetheless is welcome and appreciated by us, and valued by the lead, is Lambeth Council’s call for a Design Review Panel Panellist (consultant).

Remember also too that IHBC’s HESPR scheme, offers members one Jobs etc post free each year, and it’s transferable! So why not check out our HESPR scheme to see if it suits you. As a sole trader, for example, you can transfer the benefit, worth hundreds, to a deserving body or a future project partner.

This round of posts offers sound evidence on how our service – and the subsidies it offers – helps make a real impact on conservation-related matters, regardless of sector, disciple or level. At the same time, these postings confirm just how cost-effective the IHBC’s Jobs etc service actually is for anyone smart enough to take advantage.’

‘Our great value is a special strength in a sector that is invariably populated by price-sensitive employers, so please make sure your boss knows to use the IHBC’s Jobs etc. service, and how to get the best value from it.’

‘Just as the roles here re-affirm the core public interest priorities that underpin this IHBC service, they also capture the broad spectrum of roles encompassed by the IHBC’s accreditation model, the IHBC’s Conservation Cycle, our IHBC Areas of Competence, and the skills represented there.’

‘To find out more on our accreditation matters, our MATE and related sessions help career-focussed, conservation-conscious practitioners secure IHBC accreditation at minimal cost.
