{"id":43029,"date":"2025-05-23T17:52:24","date_gmt":"2025-05-23T16:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=43029"},"modified":"2025-05-23T17:52:24","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T16:52:24","slug":"ihbc-2025-marshawards-announced-carole-ryan-for-retired-community-contribution-and-william-johnson-for-successful-learning-awards-presented-at-ihbcshre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=43029","title":{"rendered":"IHBC 2025 MarshAwards announced: Carole Ryan for \u2018Retired- Community Contribution\u2019 and William Johnson for \u2018Successful Learning\u2019 \u2013 Awards presented at #IHBCShrewsbury2025, 13\/06"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IHBC-Marsh-Award-joint.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IHBC-Marsh-Award-joint.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32224\" style=\"width:416px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Judges in the tenth year of the IHBC Marsh Charitable Trust Awards are delighted to announce the 2025 Awards, as Carole Ryan secures the \u2018Community Contribution by a Retired Member of the IHBC\u2019 award, while the \u2018Successful Learning in Heritage Skills\u2019 goes to William Johnson of Stonewest and the Building Crafts College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Each award winner is to receive \u00a3500 and a free place at the upcoming Annual School in Shrewsbury in June 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#IHBCShrewsbury2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shrewsbury2025.ihbc.org.uk\/\">\u2018Heritage in Context \u2013 <em>Value: Plan: Change<\/em>\u2019 \u2013 From \u00a335+VAT (Online)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See our 2025 School\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/shrewsbury2025.ihbc.org.uk\/Exhibitors.html\">Exhibitor Hub<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Can\u2019t come along?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secure your Virtual Day School place + recording:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From \u00a335+VAT <a href=\"https:\/\/ihbc.wufoo.com\/forms\/z1cjn7141vq73c5\/\">HERE<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Community Contribution (Retired Member) Award \u2013 Carole Ryan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IHBC Marsh Award judges were impressed by Carole\u2019s demonstrable passion and dedication to conserving the historic environment, as well as her engagement on the local level in a variety of aspects.&nbsp; After a successful career in conservation including as the Head of Historic Environment at the former Shropshire County Council, Senior Lecturer in Heritage Conservation at Bournemouth University and Director for the MSc, and as a Chartered Surveyor and consultant, Carole continues to involve herself with local conservation issues through volunteering and community outreach.&nbsp; She has contributed extensively to the IHBC West Midlands Branch and the CPRE as a Heritage Advisor, including attendance at Agricultural Shows to promote the objectives of the Shropshire Branch of CPRE by interaction with show attendees, and talks to public meetings on local heritage matters.&nbsp; Recently Carole has led on the identification, promotion, and development of the evidence base for the successful designation of two conservation areas in Shropshire which had not been originally designated in the 1970s and 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carole reflected upon her years in the sector, saying that: \u2018The IHBC is like a family, it gives a sense of belonging when one is no longer in full time employment, and with it a sense of direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Successful Learning in Heritage Skills \u2013 William Johnson<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William impressed the judging panel with his positive approach to learning, his diligent work, and his support for junior colleagues as he undertook his Level 2 apprenticeship in stonemasonry whilst attending the Building Crafts College in Stratford, London.&nbsp; The judges further noted his successful career transition in the pursuit of a heritage craft which he has clearly taken to quite fondly.&nbsp; The application provided detailed information and was well illustrated, helping the judges to ascertain William\u2019s particular learning progress and accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William said: \u2018I am both surprised and proud to be the recipient of this prestigious award. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nigel Gilkison and his fellow tutors at the Building Crafts College who nominated me; their ongoing encouragement, guidance, and shared passion for traditional stonemasonry skills and preserving our heritage is inspiring.
