Built Environment Forum Scotland (BEFS) welcomes new research demonstrating the hugely significant contribution that Scotland\u2019s historic environment makes to the \u00a0Scottish economy. The research by ECOTEC provides evidence to show that the economic contribution of \u00a0the historic environment is comparable with many other significant industries; directly \u00a0supporting approximately 41,000 FTE (full-time equivalent) employees; contributing in \u00a0excess of \u00a32.3billion to Scotland\u2019s national GVA (gross value added); and accounting \u00a0for an estimated 2.5% of Scotland\u2019s total employment. \u00a0\u00a0The study focused on three \u00a0areas where the historic environment contributes to the economy; the core organisations \u00a0whose principal purpose is to conserve or present the historic environment; the built \u00a0heritage construction sector (covering direct repair and maintenance output in relation to \u00a0the nation\u2019s historic (pre-1919) building stock and infrastructure); and tourism (in \u00a0particular direct tourism expenditure by visitors principally attracted to Scotland as a \u00a0result of the historic environment).<\/p>\n
