{"id":41492,"date":"2024-11-19T16:03:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-19T16:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=41492"},"modified":"2024-11-19T17:14:16","modified_gmt":"2024-11-19T17:14:16","slug":"rtpi-recognises-budget-support-for-new-planners-but-urges-long-term-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=41492","title":{"rendered":"RTPI recognises budget support for new planners, but urges long-term investment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/RTPI_logo.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/RTPI_logo.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22040\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) has welcomed the government\u2019s investment into the planning system in its autumn Budget, but looks for an approach to building long-term capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>The RTPI writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With increasing numbers of planners moving into the private sector, the RTPI underscores the urgent need for initiatives that attract and retain talent within local authorities.&nbsp; Last year, the RTPI reported that a quarter of planners left the public sector between 2009 and 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, the Institute revealed that planning reform and increased housing development could miss out on over \u00a370 billion in additional value by not investing in planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon Creer, Communications Director at the RTPI, said: \u2018As demonstrated by the Chancellor, planning remains top of the government&#8217;s agenda, showing a commitment to delivering their manifesto pledges on planning reform.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On supporting a new generation of planners: \u2019The RTPI is committed to supporting the next generation of planners entering the profession and would welcome any opportunity that inspires and empowers young talent in planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018However our research has highlighted a critical challenge: Local Planning Authorities are steadily losing mid-level and senior planners to the private sector, resulting in a loss of invaluable expertise that cannot easily be replaced by new, capable graduates and apprentices alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018While we are encouraged that the new government is responsive to the profession\u2019s resourcing concerns, addressing the productivity of the planning system requires more than increasing the numbers. We need ambitious strategies for both resourcing and retention, with a comprehensive, long-term approach to building capacity in the planning system.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On expanding affordable housing:\u2018Looking ahead, there is significant potential for the government to expand pathways for affordable housing delivery.
