{"id":41227,"date":"2024-10-15T16:07:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-15T15:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=41227"},"modified":"2024-10-14T17:15:51","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T16:15:51","slug":"british-chambers-of-commerce-planning-reform-must-move-ahead-at-pace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=41227","title":{"rendered":"British Chambers of Commerce: Planning reform must \u2018move ahead at pace\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/s300_planning-aerial-960x640_UK_Gov_open_licence_140417.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/s300_planning-aerial-960x640_UK_Gov_open_licence_140417.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15390\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n<h6><em>image for illustration: Open Government Licence v3.0<\/em><\/h6>\n\n<h3>The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) is calling for swift action by the Government to reform planning in England, to help stimulate business investment and unlock growth.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>BCC writes:<\/p>\n<p>In a submission to the consultation on proposed changes to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) the BCC is urging ministers to \u2018move at pace\u2019 to avoid \u2018creating uncertainty and inertia in the system\u2019.\u00a0 The submission says the planning system in England must \u2018underpin the strategic development of our economic infrastructure\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Key points in the submission include the need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Boost skills and experience in local planning authorities to deliver the Government\u2019s ambitious plans.<\/li>\n<li>Plan better for business to avoid unintended consequences.<\/li>\n<li>Further guidance is needed on how local authorities will be required to address the need for employment land.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure appropriate use of \u2018grey belt\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Businesses tell us they are prepared to pay a reasonable increase in planning fees if this leads to improvements in the service they receive.<\/li>\n<li>Ring fence planning fees to increase resources and improve quality of service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jonny Haseldine, Policy Manager at the British Chambers of Commerce said: \u2018Getting a planning system that works for business is crucial to driving investment and economic growth.\u00a0 We welcome the proposed NPPF changes, and ministers should move quickly to implement them.\u00a0 Plans for more housing are welcome and will help employers access skilled staff in local communities. However, that must not come at the expense of land for business use. We need clarity on how local authorities will be required to assess the need for employment land, so business can invest.\u00a0 The shortage of planning officers is also severely hampering economic growth. We welcome the Government\u2019s commitment to recruit 300 more planners.
