{"id":4094,"date":"2012-04-20T17:11:45","date_gmt":"2012-04-20T17:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=4094"},"modified":"2012-04-20T17:11:45","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T17:11:45","slug":"ihbc-in-private-eye-reaching-dizzy-heights-with-vat-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=4094","title":{"rendered":"IHBC in Private Eye: Reaching dizzy heights with VAT campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) &#8211; alongside the Heritage Alliance &#8211; has been the subject of substantial reporting by Private Eye\u2019s Piloti, as the issue of the proposed raid on VAT support for key heritage projects is making its way up the news headlines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Comments from the IHBC\u2019s Chair, Jo Evans, have been used to highlight Piloti\u2019s concern that the new regime will only aggravate problems in the \u2018present insane system\u2019 that already \u2018encourages neglect and destruction\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Jo Evans, in her press comments, has highlighted how the VAT changes will \u2018penalise further low-carbon, high-skilled maintenance and regeneration opportunities \u2013 often community-based when they involve the heritage sector \u2013 in favour of high-carbon alternatives already readily funded through more mainstream industries that focus on demolition, disposal and new-build.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Is that what the government wants?\u2019, Piloti asks, and concludes: \u2018Perhaps it does\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Following the report in Private Eye, IHBC Director Se\u00e1n O\u2019Reilly added: \u2018Through the vibrant \u2018Cut the VAT\u2019 campaign, key parts of the mainstream construction sector \u2013 including builders, architects, trade bodies and quality developers &#8211; are also developing our case against the VAT changes and the missed opportunities those changes represent.
