{"id":40125,"date":"2024-06-08T17:06:17","date_gmt":"2024-06-08T16:06:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=40125"},"modified":"2024-06-08T17:06:17","modified_gmt":"2024-06-08T16:06:17","slug":"ihbc-features-heritage-from-the-council-doorstep-farmer-ordered-to-pay-45000-for-demolishing-dovecote-without-consent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=40125","title":{"rendered":"IHBC features \u2018Heritage from the (council) doorstep\u2019: Farmer ordered to pay \u00a345,000 for demolishing dovecote without consent"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>A Shropshire farmer has been ordered to pay fines and costs of more than \u00a345,000 for demolishing a Grade II listed dovecote on his land without consent, reports Shropshire Council.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026one of the worst examples of deliberate damage and destruction to a listed building\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Shropshire Council writes:<\/p>\n<p>The case was brought by Shropshire Council against Philip Terrance Gore of Lower Newton Farm, Yockleton, who was sentenced at Kidderminster Magistrates\u2019 Court today (30 April 2024).<\/p>\n<p>Philip Gore had previously admitted demolishing the dovecote (pictured) that was believed to date from the late 17th century and was the last remaining building associated with an ancient moated farmstead that once existed at the site.<\/p>\n<p>Philip Gore was fined \u00a330,000 and ordered to pay a contribution towards the council\u2019s cost of \u00a315,000, plus a victims surcharge of \u00a3190 \u2013 a total of \u00a345,190.<\/p>\n<p>The judge said that the fine for such an offence should be more than any potential financial gain by the defendant for the offence, and that the fine should also act as a deterrent against the commission of similar offences.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Schofield, Shropshire Council\u2019s Cabinet member for planning and regulatory services, said:\u00a0 \u2018Shropshire Council became aware of the offence when he submitted a notification for a new grain store on the site of the former dovecote.\u00a0 When officers visited the farm in March 2022 they found that the dovecote demolished and the site levelled with hardcore in preparation for the new building. Altering or demolishing a listed building without consent is a criminal offence.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We have not taken the decision to prosecute him lightly.\u00a0 This case will have long term consequences for both him and his farm business.\u00a0 However, this was one of the worst examples of deliberate damage and destruction to a listed building seen in the county in recent decades.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Shropshire has 7,500 listed buildings, some of which are of global significance.
