Following on from this, Architect Barnaby Wheeler gave us a detailed and insightful look at the conservation works to Reading Abbey ruins, noted HERE offering us an intriguing glimpse of what awaits those attending the Annual School later this month.

We were also fortunate to be joined by National Trust Curator Dr Caroline Ikin, who hosted a fascinating talk on the history of Munstead Wood, linked HERE, and the creative partnership between Gertrude Jekyll and Architect Edwin Lutyens that has shaped the history, and now the future management, of this important estate.

The series culminated in a highly thought provoking and inspiring session on heritage and conservation in Reading, led by Richard Bennett DL and Evelyn Williams, on behalf of Reading Civic Society, outlined HERE., offering a perspective on change and development in the city over the last 60 years and illustrating the important role of Civic Societies in shaping conservation and a sense of place in our communities, whilst also setting the scene for this year’s Annual School in June.

Engagement in the events was very positive, with over 640 people registering for the events, and nearly 300 attending live, whilst hundreds more have benefitted from access to recordings via the IHBC YouTube channel and Reading2024 website.

IHBC Education and Application Support Officer, Angharad Hart, said: ‘This is the third year that we have offered ‘pre-conference’ CPD in the run-up to the school, but the first to have a full programme of online content. It was a pleasure to work with the speakers, and colleagues alike, to make this happen.

We have had such a variety of topics, all linking to the Annual School theme, and all offering something unique and interesting.
