Welcome to the IHBC\u2019s fourth issue of its Research for Practice Digest<\/em>. For this issue we spotlight Dr Cristina Gonzalez-Longo<\/a> RIBA SCA RIAS FHEA FRSA the founder and director of the MSc in Architectural Design<\/a> for the Conservation of Built Heritage at the Department of Architecture, University of Strathclyde, a fully recognised IHBC course, and leader of the Architectural Design and Conservation Research Unit (ADCRU)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cristina is a practising architect, running her practice Cristina Gonzalez-Longo Architect<\/em> for over 20 years. Her research and teaching are very much informed by her practical experiences such as being the project and resident architect of Queensberry House, a category A listed building part of the Scottish Parliament Building complex. This seventeenth-century building is by Mr James Smith, the first architect in Scotland in a modern sense, and she has pursued further research becoming an expert in Smith, publishing extensively about his work and significance<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Her main research interest is \u2018Conservation by Design\u2019 looking at the vital role of architectural design in the conservation of built heritage. This was the topic of her PhD thesis now published<\/a>.\u00a0 Cristina firmly believes that, as history shows, the more integrated architectural conservation is within the wider architectural field, the better both will be.\u00a0 Thereafter her research engages with all the areas relevant to the interdisciplinary field of architecture, from criticism, history, and theory to technology and science, and with the design project integrating all.\u00a0 She promotes creativity and scientific approach and engages with global discussions.\u00a0 She is, for a second term, the President of ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Education and Training (CIF)<\/a> a network of 70 experts in education all over the world, participating in events such as the recent UNESCO WCCAE 2024 conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n
