{"id":39606,"date":"2024-04-12T16:27:25","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T15:27:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=39606"},"modified":"2024-04-12T16:27:25","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T15:27:25","slug":"save-and-architects-journal-launch-ideas-competition-for-ms-oxford-street-site-with-restore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=39606","title":{"rendered":"SAVE and Architects&#8217; Journal launch ideas competition for M&#038;S Oxford Street site with \u2018re:store\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-33134\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Marks_Spencer_Marble_Arch_Gary_Rogers_Wikimedia.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" \/>SAVE and <em>The Architects&#8217; Journal<\/em> are launching a new ideas competition for alternative uses and the wider revitalisation of the M&amp;S Oxford Street building and its surroundings in London\u2019s West End, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savebritainsheritage.org\/docs\/general\/ReStore_competition_brief.pdf\">re:store<\/a>!<\/h3>\n<h6><em>image for illustration:\u00a0Gary Rogers\u00a0\/\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/f\/f0\/Marks_and_Spencer_-_geograph.org.uk_-_1466040.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marks and Spencer<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0&#8211; Commons Wikimedia<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 The question of how to handle the future of prominent retail buildings\u2026.is being played out&#8230;.across the UK\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>SAVE Britain\u2019s Heritage writes:<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a title=\"re:store competition brief\" href=\"https:\/\/www.savebritainsheritage.org\/docs\/general\/ReStore_competition_brief.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">re:store competition<\/a>, which is independent of M&amp;S, seeks to promote debate and ideally create a model for the adaptive re-use of the UK&#8217;s multitude of attractive but ageing department store buildings.<\/p>\n<p>According to the brief, entries should strive to meet five objectives including prioritising whole-life carbon design principles, preserving heritage and recognising the challenges facing the world-famous Oxford Street and potentially other high streets across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The re:store contest is open to UK-based architects, architectural assistants and architectural students and has a closing date of Wednesday 24<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0April.<\/p>\n<p>Henrietta Billings, director of SAVE Britain&#8217;s Heritage, said: &#8220;The question of how to handle the future of prominent retail buildings like the M&amp;S store on Oxford Street is being played out in high streets and town centres across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope this competition will spark fresh and imaginative ideas about new lives for these well-loved city centre landmarks \u2013 fit for a climate-conscious\u00a021<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0century and beyond \u2013 that everyone can benefit from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily Booth, editor of the AJ, said: \u201cWe\u2019re excited to launch this competition with SAVE Britain\u2019s Heritage to encourage creative ideas, promote debate and share imaginative approaches for building reuse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the face of the climate emergency and pressures on high streets around the country, we hope re:store will act as a catalyst for fresh thinking \u2013 and we look forward to your entries!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Up to 20 entries will be selected, with a shortlist of six then chosen to take part in a day-long charette in May. These six will be paid honorariums of \u00a35,000 each to develop their ideas, with no overall winner selected.
