The Ordnance Survey (OS) \u2013 Britain\u2019s national mapping agency – is offering a prize pot of \u00a3115,000 for new ideas that use geography to help solve problems in communities, with a deadline for applications of 28 March.<\/span><\/p>\n

The GeoVation Challenge will award a first prize of \u00a340,000 and three runner-up prizes of \u00a325,000. Entrants will take up the challenge of \u2018How can we transform neighbourhoods together?\u2019 by suggesting ways of improving the quality of life and enhancing community spirit in their local areas.<\/p>\n

The programme aims to tackle issues such as anti-social behaviour, graffiti, fly-tipping and litter, the degeneration of high streets, and citizen apathy.<\/p>\n

The ideas must feature the use of Ordnance Survey products (but can include the free-to-use data and services OS OpenData and OS OpenSpace) and can also incorporate other data, including geographical.<\/p>\n

The problems that the programme seeks to solve include:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 How do we connect people who want to work with those who need their skills?<\/p>\n

\u00b7 How do we establish a sense of community in the neighbourhoods in which we live?<\/p>\n

\u00b7 How can we discourage people and businesses from littering and fly-tipping?<\/p>\n

\u00b7 How can we help local independent businesses remain on our high streets?<\/p>\n

\u00b7 How do we ensure public services and resources are accessible for all ages?<\/p>\n

\u00b7 How can we ensure that residents of all ages remain engaged with community issues?<\/p>\n
