Maidenhead’s call for a Senior Conservation Officer and the Test Valley ‘s Building Conservation Officer (Planning and Building) post.’

Clearly, even at quieter times such as these, local government in the UK continues to look to IHBC members to fill their critical posts. This is to be expected of course, especially given our shared understanding of public interest and duties.’

‘At the same time, the same consultation and community engagement that looks back to our local government roots is also evident in ecclesiastical and related roles linked to the management and care of places of worship. For example the Church of England (Birmingham) looks to us to identify Care of Churches Officer (CCO) and ‘Volunteer Professional Advisors – Building Services, Sustainability, and the Environment’. That role is evident also at the Diocesan level, as Chelmsford, Newcastle and Carlisle call for Church Buildings Support Officers as the best way to deliver outcomes linked to new, targeted heritage focussed funding.’

‘Altogether these posts show how estate-holding bodies with heritage interests, just as much as local authorities, recognise the importance of dedicated IHBC-modelled conservation skills sets across the management of their resources. They also register just how wide-ranging are the practice areas covered by the IHBC’s Areas of Competence, notably, here and at our Reading Annual School, the Area of Competence corresponding to the ‘Management’ of assets and resources. And regardless of levels of roles or scales of experience, each post relies in some way on the holistic and interdisciplinary standards in the IHBC’s conservation accreditation.’

‘Of course the private sector is responsible for the care and curation of the vast majority of our heritage resources. So it is both gratifying and heartening to see the high regard for our standards across some of the best of the more commercially-focussed operations. And, in confirmation, this round we see Stephen Levrant Heritage Architecture Ltd looking for an ‘Experienced Built Heritage Consultant’, HCUK Group for a Heritage Consultant – Director, and Janus Conservation Ltd: Historic Building Surveyor.

If the scale of posts on our ‘Jobs etc’ service just now is less dramatic than in more recent years – reflecting as it does wider economic pressures – they diversity still capture well the exceptionally wide spectrum of relevant roles encompassed by the IHBC’s accreditation model, the IHBC Areas of Competence, and the skills represented there.’

‘To find out more on such matters, our MATE and related sessions support accreditation, while they also delve into the IHBC’s Competences and Conservation Cycle. As such they help applicants’ align their skills to the principles we use to assess interdisciplinary competence, all in line with national and international conservation practice standards.’

Current and recent posts (some now closed) on IHBC Jobs etc. include:

Stephen Levrant Heritage Architecture Ltd: Experienced Built Heritage Consultant

Diocese of Carlisle: Church Buildings Support Officer

National Trust: Senior Building Surveyor

Diocese of Newcastle: Church Buildings Support Officer

Historic England: Team Leader – Development Advice

Test Valley Borough Council: Building Conservation Officer (Planning and Building)

The Spitalfields Trust: Buildings Restoration and Operations Manager

English Heritage: Estate Manager

English Heritage: Building Conservation Manager

National Trust: Building Surveyor

Historic England: Senior Building Conservation Advisor

The Royal Borough of Windsor &
