IHBC Director Sean O\u2019Reilly said: \u2018Our NewsBlog<\/em> updates on career opportunities posted on the \u2018IHBC Jobs etc.<\/em><\/a>\u2019 service confirm the huge variety of roles that employers are looking to us to help fill.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Jobs etc.<\/em> posts typically range widely across sectors, skills, employers, locations and roles, just like the IHBC, but all have one special consideration in common: they target IHBC members and their unique and interdisciplinary skills sets and profiles to help secure the person with the perfect profile of competence, knowledge and experience in conservation and related disciplines and roles.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018The current round of postings continues to highlight the need both for strategic advisory roles and on-the-ground practice and support-focussed skills in building and area conservation, and in the wider care and management of buildings, estate and property.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018And though Christmas is traditionally a quiet time on our Jobs etc<\/em> service, this one seems – happily \u2013 much busier than usual.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Headline posts this round include both senior and substantial posts in heritage-management activities, including the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust: Director of Estates and Preservation (a repost) as well as two senior posts at The Royal Household, a Property Project Manager and a Senior Building Surveyor.\u00a0 At the other end of the salaried spectrum on IHBC\u2019s Jobs etc<\/em> service, the Church of England is looking for Volunteer Professional Advisors \u2013 Building Services, Sustainability, and the Environment.\u00a0 This duet of posts also demonstrates how the IHBC\u2019s Jobs etc<\/em> service can operate\u00a0 as a communications network to secure high-end skills, whether tied to substantial salaries or voluntary capacity.<\/p>\n

\u2018Altogether these encapsulate how estate-holding bodies with substantial heritage considerations also increasingly recognise the importance of dedicated conservation skills sets across their management of heritage resources, including thei volunteer advisory roles.\u00a0 They also register just how wide-ranging are the practice areas covered by the IHBC\u2019s Areas of Competence, notably, here, that Area of Competence corresponding to \u2018Management\u2019 of assets and resources.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018UK local government also continues to look to the IHBC\u2019s members to fill their posts, as may be expected, especially given our shared understanding of public interest and duties.\u2019<\/p>\n

For this round again the selection from Councils is smaller than many, but still includes the variety of titles and roles that reflects local priorities and arrangements, while also offering a perfect profile and spread of professional roles under the IHBC mantle. In London, the joint Richmond etc.<\/em> & Wandsworth Council seeks a Senior Conservation and Urban Design Officer and Conservation and Design Officer, while Enfield is advertising for a Conservation Officer and, elsewhere, East Suffolk is looking for a Heritage Officer or Assistant Heritage Officer and Manchester City a Planning Officer, Urban Design and Heritage.<\/p>\n

Regardless of levels of roles or scales of experience, each post relies in some way on the holistic and interdisciplinary standards in the IHBC\u2019s conservation accreditation.<\/p>\n

And that diversification of titles and nuancing of roles is also reflected in potentially quite different contexts across the third and ecclesiastical sector, as they increasingly invest in the IHBC\u2019s conservation framework of standards and skills: in Scotland Inverness City Heritage Trust seeks a Manager, while in England The Church of England Diocese of Chelmsford seeks a Diocesan Advisory Committee Secretary and both Dioceses of Chelmsford and Blackburn call for Church Buildings Support Officers.<\/p>\n

\u2018Of course the private sector is responsible for the care and curation of the vast majority of our heritage resources.\u00a0 So it is both gratifying and heartening to see the high regard for our standards across some of the best of the more commercially-focussed operations. And, in confirmation, this round we see HCUK Group calling for a Heritage Consultant \u2013 Director; Janus Conservation Ltd for a Historic Building Surveyor; Purcell, for a Heritage Consultant, and Alan Baxter for a Heritage Team Consultant.<\/p>\n

If the scale of posts on our \u2018<\/em>Jobs etc<\/em><\/a>\u2019<\/em> \u00a0service<\/em> just now is less dramatic than in more recent years \u2013 reflecting as it does the wider economic downturn \u2013 they still capture well the exceptionally wide spectrum of relevant roles encompassed by the IHBC\u2019s accreditation model, the IHBC Areas of Competence<\/a>, and the skills represented there.\u2019<\/p>\n
