{"id":38509,"date":"2023-12-12T17:53:27","date_gmt":"2023-12-12T17:53:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=38509"},"modified":"2023-12-12T17:53:27","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T17:53:27","slug":"nottingham-trent-university-to-launch-new-1-5m-centre-for-sustainable-construction-and-retrofit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=38509","title":{"rendered":"Nottingham Trent University to launch new \u00a31.5m centre for sustainable construction and retrofit"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-38452\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/skills_tools_Open_Gov_Licence_v3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" \/>Nottingham Trent University (NTU) will invest \u00a31.5 million into developing skills, research, training and consultancy to support the UK construction sector reach net zero.<\/h3>\n<h6><em>image for illustration: Open Government Licence v3.0<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026[the centre] will explore how the built environment sector transitions to a low carbon future, while addressing the retrofit skills gap\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>NTU writes:<\/p>\n<p>The University will launch the\u00a0Centre for Sustainable Construction and Retrofit\u00a0to develop solutions, skills and support locally and nationally to enable the transition to net zero within the built environment sector.\u00a0This will take the form of new courses and skills training, socio-technical research and consultancy opportunities for business.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Professor Richard Bull, Deputy Dean of the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment, the centre will bring together a range of expertise to help the sector reach the ambitious net zero climate change targets by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNet-zero by 2050 presents a huge challenge to the construction sector, which accounts for up to 50 per cent of carbon emissions,\u201d said Professor Bull, an expert in energy, sustainability and the built environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn absence of skills, knowledge and expertise threaten to derail plans for the UK\u2019s important net zero targets. But this ground-breaking centre will enhance the way in which existing buildings and new construction can meet those all-important climate change objectives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNTU has a well-earned reputation for sustainability in the built environment and our research in housing retrofit in particular has a strong track record. We plan to develop new ways to support industry, to help them learn the new skills needed to retrofit existing properties en masse, and create new buildings in a sustainable way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NTU\u2019s record in sustainability and the built environment includes the University\u2019s \u2018Scale-up Retrofit 2050\u2019 whitepaper report which called for a nationwide programme to boost the energy efficiency of existing homes through deep retrofit.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s REMOURBAN project demonstrated the benefits of deep retrofits and was showcased as part of the UK Built Environment Virtual Pavilion during COP26.<\/p>\n<p>This was followed by a \u2018scaling-up deep retrofit for social landlords\u2019 pilot project, which was funded by the Energy Saving Trust and ongoing collaboration with ARC Partnership and Nottingham City Council.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre for Sustainable Construction and Retrofit will explore how the built environment sector transitions to a low carbon future, while addressing the retrofit skills gap via the creation of new courses and providing consultancy support for business.<\/p>\n<p>It will launch on 14 November\u00a0at the University\u2019s Newton Building, City Campus, during an event which is open to policy makers, business leaders, academics and students.<\/p>\n<p>A panel will explore the challenges and opportunities for the built environment sector to meet the challenge of Net Zero 2050.
