The first issue will be sent in hard copy by post as well as by e-mail to make sure all are aware of the service, and allow interested members to ‘opt in’ where interested. The e-letter features the launch of a sector survey on capacity for volunteering in the sector. This will help the IHBC plan its support for its existing and future volunteers.

Eddie Booth, IHBC President, said: ’This e-letter is an important initiative to enhance high-level contact between members and our council. As we increase both quantity and diversity of professionals with conservation specialisms, members need to see where we are going. Increasing communication between council and members can only help us better address the needs of the sector.’

Dave Chetwyn, IHBC Chair, endorsed the initiative, saying: ‘Our membership is increasingly representative of the full range of professional input into the conservation of places, from primary specialisms in urban design and regeneration to cultural interests such as architectural history and archaeology, all connected by the multi-disciplinary skills and understanding that are essential to effective conservation. Their diverse backgrounds underpin conservation successes, and the newsletter, as well as the volunteering survey it announces, lay the foundation for developing the huge resource our membership represents.’

Sheila Stones, IHBC Vice Chair, has played a special role in supporting voluntary activities through the IHBC’s Branch network, its regional groups of volunteers. She said ‘These new developments register a step change in how we plan support for volunteers. We want to open new opportunities for volunteers, and our survey will let people feed their thoughts directly our council.’

Seán O’Reilly, IHBC Director, said: ‘This enhanced communication across our members and volunteers will shape our forward planning. Not only will it tell us how best to maximise our volunteering resource, but it will let us integrate that support with the development of our business plan, which is now under way, and which we hope to launch at our Annual School in London in 2010’.

Click here to download pdf of Members’ e-letter Issue 1: April 2009

Queries: Seán O’Reilly: (0131) 5583671; director@ihbc.org.u

The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), the key professional body for built and historic environment conservation specialists, has launched a new ‘e-letter’ to help its members keep up with new developments in the institute.
