{"id":37014,"date":"2023-07-18T16:01:48","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T15:01:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=37014"},"modified":"2023-07-17T18:17:37","modified_gmt":"2023-07-17T17:17:37","slug":"applications-now-open-for-the-2024-spab-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=37014","title":{"rendered":"Applications now open for the 2024 SPAB Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-17357\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/SPAB_logo.png\" alt=\"SPAB logo\" width=\"200\" height=\"198\" \/>The SPAB Fellowship is a training programme designed to broaden the skills and experience of craftspeople involved in historic building repairs, and is now open for 2024 applications.<!--more--><\/h3>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 Fellows develop their own skills and approach to repair, and learn about other traditional craft techniques through site visits\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>SPAB writes:<\/p>\n<p>Fellows develop their own skills and approach to repair, and learn about other traditional craft techniques through site visits guided by experienced conservation professionals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>It is a full-time programme, from mid-March to mid-December 2024, running in three blocks, with roughly two months on, two months off.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>We recruit three or four Fellows each year, including one Millwright Fellow, whose programme runs continuously.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Please apply by Wednesday 27 September 2023.<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>Programme<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The programme is divided into three blocks of two months, enabling Fellows to return to work in between blocks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In the first two blocks, Fellows travel around the country together, learning about traditional materials, skills and repair techniques through workshops and site visits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The third block consists of longer hands-on placements, tailored to each Fellow\u2019s individual interests and training needs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Millwright Fellowship runs continuously for nine months, with millwright training placements between blocks, while other Fellows are back at work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The programme covers a wide variety of craft skills, including timber framing, lime plastering, thatching, blacksmithing, pargeting, flint knapping, stained glass, stonemasonry and bricklaying.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Fellows will sometimes travel with the SPAB Scholars (architects, surveyors and structural engineers), sharing knowledge, working together, developing their philosophy of repair and learning about each other&#8217;s professions &#8211; bridging the gap commonly faced in the workplace.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>This is a full-time, intensive programme, including some weekend work, so cannot be combined with other work or study.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>Supervision and Assessment<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Instead of formal submissions, Fellows keep a notebook throughout the programme, recording visits and repair methods through writing and sketching.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>They also report on their progress to the SPAB team at various points throughout the programme, and share updates for the SPAB\u2019s communications channels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The SPAB Fellowship is run by Fellowship Officer Pip Soodeen and overseen by the SPAB\u2019s Education and Training Committee. Fellows are also assigned a SPAB Fellowship mentor (usually a past Fellow).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>Funding<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>There are no course fees for the SPAB Fellowship.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Fellows each receive a \u00a37,000 bursary to cover basic travel and livings costs during the programme.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Millwright Fellow receives a further \u00a33,750 bursary to cover additional travel and living costs during the millwrighting training placements.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Supplementary finance of around \u00a35,000 is usually required.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>CITB grant funding may also be available for employers registered with CITB at least 12 months prior to the Fellowship programme commencing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>Application and Recruitment<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Three or four Fellowships are awarded each year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The SPAB recruits Fellows on merit and is committed to eliminating discrimination and encouraging diversity in the sector. We particularly welcome applications by people from backgrounds under-represented in building conservation (such as those from disadvantaged socio-economic background, women and black and minority ethnic communities).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Please note that the offer of a SPAB Fellowship is subject to the applicant providing evidence of their right to live and work in the UK.
