Architect\u2019s Journal<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n

The winners of the AJ\u2019s \u2018best in low-cost design\u2019 project awards were chosen for their\u00a0Adelaide Street, Belfast scheme, which replaced a lane of vehicular traffic\u00a0with a half-kilometre of urban garden and new public space.<\/span><\/p>\n

Designed for incidental play and containing 140m2<\/sup>\u00a0of new planting, it offers a resource for local residents with little previous access to outdoor playspace or gardens \u2013 and has unexpectedly created a new habitat for hawk moth caterpillars.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judges said Adelaide Street was an example of people-centred placemaking and collaboration\u00a0<\/span>in what is still a stubbornly car-centric city, with the installing setting<\/span>\u00a0a ‘blueprint’ for similar schemes in Northern Ireland and beyond.<\/p>\n

The panel was impressed that the team \u2018gave back the road as a community asset while retaining the traffic\u2019 and that the installation formed a part of the planned \u2018reinhabitation\u2019 of Belfast\u2019s centre over the next 10 to 20 years.<\/p>\n

Two sustainability prizes were awarded for the first time in AJ Small Projects\u2019 28-year-history. These were for\u00a0the Boathouse\u00a0by Ashworth Parkes Architects and\u00a0Black Barn Studios\u00a0by Charlie Luxton Design.<\/p>\n

Both were determined as strong contenders for the lessons that can be learnt from environmentally sustainable design, including the importance of the data tracking it, as well as construction and materiality.<\/p>\n

Bogor Musholla\u00a0by CAUKIN studio took the People\u2019s Choice award, winning nearly 40 per cent out of the votes received from AJ readers in an online poll.<\/p>\n

The timber-framed structure, which serves as a prayer facility and community centre for Bogor in West Java, consists of one main space adjacent to a small, covered veranda and washrooms. Seismic activity in the Indonesian province was taken into consideration during the design process.<\/p>\n

More than 170 entries were received from all around the country for this year\u2019s awards, sponsored by Marley, which were whittled down to a shortlist of 20. They ranged from the boathouse to a bench, a prayer room to a workplace-cum-recording studio, and a rolling bridge to the winning urban garden and play structure.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday (3 May) the shortlisted designers presented their projects to the panel of judges in a crit-style format. The awards were announced later in the day at a free-to-attend event held at the London offices of Morris+Company in Hackney.<\/p>\n

The panel of judges included: Esther Everett, head of design development at the London Legacy Development Corporation; Pedro Gil, director at Studio Gil; and Louis Jobst, director at Akin Studio and the\u00a0winner of last year\u2019s award.<\/p>\n

Previous winners of the AJ Small Projects award include\u00a0Rashid Ali Architects,\u00a0Carmody Groarke,\u00a0Haworth Tompkins,\u00a0David Leech Architects, Hawkins\\Brown,\u00a0Kate Darby Architects\u00a0and\u00a0Mole Architects.<\/p>\n
