{"id":35836,"date":"2023-03-11T16:04:31","date_gmt":"2023-03-11T16:04:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=35836"},"modified":"2023-03-10T18:28:00","modified_gmt":"2023-03-10T18:28:00","slug":"new-data-reveals-half-of-construction-workers-feel-lonely-at-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=35836","title":{"rendered":"New data reveals half of construction workers feel lonely at work"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-25514\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CIC.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"131\" \/>New data from research conducted by 3GEM on behalf of Nescaf\u00e9 Make Chat Work and surveyed 350 UK construction workers\/in SME companies of 5-250 employees in October 2022 reveals that half (47%) of construction workers in the UK feel lonely in the workplace.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026(79%)\u2026.agree that having opportunities to talk to colleagues around coffee breaks would make them feel less lonely\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The Construction Industry Council (CIC) writes:<\/p>\n<p>The findings, conducted by NESCAF\u00c9 as part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nestleprofessional.co.uk\/your-business\/small-medium-workplace\/make-chat-work\">\u2018<\/a>Make Chat Work\u2019 campaign, are announced amidst recent concerns around wellbeing in the construction industry \u2013 with a report from the\u00a0All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Issues Affecting Men and Boys\u00a0recommending more stringent mental health provisions should be written into construction contracts.<\/p>\n<p>Further insights from the research revealed that eight out of ten (79%) of construction workers agree that having opportunities to talk to colleagues around coffee breaks would make them feel less lonely. In addition, nearly all (99%) of respondents said that getting together for a coffee break is important for team morale and 94% look forward to a coffee break with colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0\u2018Make Chat Work\u2019 campaign by NESCAF\u00c9\u00a0aims to help businesses create a culture that nurtures their employees\u2019 wellbeing through encouraging interactions, connections and engagement between workers. As part of the campaign, NESCAF\u00c9 has partnered with the Construction Industry Council (CIC), to deliver insights and information to help businesses in the sector improve workplace wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>Nadia Roberts, Brand Manager at NESCAF\u00c9 at Nestl\u00e9 Professional, said:\u00a0\u201cOur research shows that coffee breaks at work aren\u2019t just a \u2018nice to have\u2019 but are an important part of the day for employees \u2013 particularly for those that are experiencing feelings of loneliness. Breaks give workers time that\u2019s been specifically carved out to connect, talk and engage with each other and an opportunity to take time out and switch off from the day-to-day pressures \u2013 important for workers in any business, but particularly a sector like construction, and the related trades such as plumbers, carpenters and electricians, which are\u00a0typically male-dominated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of the partnership with the CIC, there will be a webinar taking place on Wednesday 26th April at 12.30pm, titled \u2018Combatting Loneliness in the Construction Industry\u2019. All CIC members are welcome to join and hear the panel of Industry professionals from CIC, NESCAF\u00c9 and the Lighthouse Club charity explore this topic.<\/p>\n<p>CIC Chief Executive Graham Watts, said:\u00a0\u201cCIC promotes expertise and knowledge on topics that are of collective interest to the construction sector and wellbeing is a topic that impacts everyone in the industry. We are pleased to partner with NESCAF\u00c9 to cover this crucial subject and help share insights which could benefit the whole of the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through the partnership with the CIC, NESCAF\u00c9 will be making a donation to construction industry charity\u00a0The Lighthouse Club.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Hill, CEO at the Lighthouse Club charity, which provides financial and emotional support to the construction community and their families, said:\u00a0\u201cExperiencing poor wellbeing is an everyday reality for thousands of construction workers. Stress, anxiety and depression accounts for a fifth of all work-related illnesses and every single working day in the UK, two construction workers take their own life. We welcome campaigns like Make Chat Work \u2013 it\u2019s an opportunity to ignite conversation around workplace wellbeing and brings to life the importance of workers in the sector talking more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, NESCAF\u00c9 has also created various tools for employers looking to support workplace wellbeing that are free for businesses to download. This includes a Make Chat Work Guide packed full of insights, knowledge and practical tips on how to make the most of the coffee break in the workplace.
