{"id":35797,"date":"2023-03-07T16:06:27","date_gmt":"2023-03-07T16:06:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=35797"},"modified":"2023-03-04T18:35:23","modified_gmt":"2023-03-04T18:35:23","slug":"sunday-times-carbonlace-epcs-are-useless-wrong-and-easily-rigged-new-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=35797","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Times\/CarbonLace: EPCs are useless, wrong and easily rigged &#8211; new research"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-31568\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/flats_houses_graphic_green.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" \/>Shocking new research shows that Energy Performance Certificates are inaccurate at best, useless at worst, and easily rigged.<\/h3>\n<h6><em>image for illustration<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 \u2018The lower the EPC rating, the bigger the overestimation\u2026\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>Landlord Today<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>\u2026.A Sunday Times report over the weekend revealed the results of sophisticated and highly detailed research by a firm called CarbonLaces.<\/p>\n<p>The firm claims EPCs overestimate energy use by up to 344 per cent &#8211; yet they remain a key part of current and expected legislation affecting landlords and other home owners.<\/p>\n<p>CarbonLaces compared the EPCs of more than 17,000 homes with their actual use, as logged by smart meters every half hour for at least 300 days, to calculate their energy bills.<\/p>\n<p>The Sunday Times reports: \u201cThe average metered gas and electricity use for all the properties studied was 125kWh per square metre a year \u2014 91 per cent lower than what their EPCs claim (239kWh\/m2\/yr).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lower the EPC rating, the bigger the overestimation&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This inaccuracy is \u201cquite staggering\u201d says Madhuban Kumar, the founder of CarbonLaces.<\/p>\n<p>She says EPCs overestimate not only energy use but also carbon emissions, by between 20 per cent (for EPCs rated C) and 308 per cent (for EPCs rates G).<\/p>\n<p>The lengthy Sunday Times report also claims that EPCs on new build homes are open to widespread abuse.<\/p>\n<p>For new homes, EPCs can be issued on design data alone\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>One expert tells the paper: \u201cAll they do is make the plaster wall box airtight, while the building itself is very leaky. Give me a garden shed and enough mastic, foam and plaster board and I can make it airtight . . . It\u2019s nothing to do with making sure that they\u2019re energy efficient.
