{"id":3549,"date":"2012-01-06T17:08:01","date_gmt":"2012-01-06T17:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=3549"},"modified":"2012-01-06T17:50:52","modified_gmt":"2012-01-06T17:50:52","slug":"willetts-launches-research-council-impact-reports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=3549","title":{"rendered":"Willetts launches Research Council impact reports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"yui_3_2_0_1_1325866838490849\"><strong id=\"yui_3_2_0_1_1325866838490843\"><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Universities and Science Minister David Willetts has released a series of reports on the impact of Research Council funding during a speech at Policy Exchange, including a report from Research Councils UK and individual reports from the seven individual Research Councils.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>David Willetts said: \u2018These reports demonstrate that the UK is a world leader in science and research. From the development of groundbreaking new treatments to studies that shape public policy and improve lives, the significant economic and societal impact of the UK research base is extremely impressive.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The reports detail how research has created wealth, improved society, increased the number of skilled individuals and promoted health and wellbeing. Examples range from the development of a new form of broccoli to informing defence policy in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Research Councils UK (RCUK) is the strategic partnership of the UK&#8217;s seven Research Councils who annually invest around \u00a33 billion in research. It supports excellent research, as judged by peer review, that has an impact on the growth, prosperity and wellbeing of the UK.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The RCUK report details the various activities through which the Research Councils are working together to achieve greater impact. This includes collaboration with partners in key commercial sectors, the Technology Strategy Board and governmental departments. A copy of the <em>RCUK Impact Report 2011<\/em> is available\u00a0 at: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcuk.ac.uk\/Publications\/reports\/Pages\/RCUKImpactReport2011.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">LINK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The remaining seven reports detail how each council is supporting research and science and contain excellent case studies of the impact this research has had on the economy and science.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Examples from the reports include:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 AHRC: An AHRC-funded research project let to a team researching and communicating the history of Birmingham\u2019s suburbs, resulting in new public exhibitions being developed at the Birmingham Museum.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 BBSRC: Beneforte Broccoli, developed from BBSRC-funded research at the Institute of Food Research and the John Innes Centre boosts the body\u2019s antioxidant enzyme levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 EPSRC: Autonomy, an EPSRC spin-out company, was started by Dr Mike Lynch at Cambridge University in 1996 and sold to Hewlett Packard in August 2011 for over \u00a37bn.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 ESRC: Professor Theo Farrell undertook an assessment of the British Army\u2019s performance in Operation Moshtarak, a 2010 offensive in southern Afghanistan. The resulting classified report informed doctrine development and pre-deployment training.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 MRC: Humira<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> that was created by Cambridge Antibody Technology (CAT) using technology licensed from MRC and is now estimated to be the world\u2019s top earning pharmaceutical product, expected to reach $10bn in sales by 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 NERC: The NERC Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) was critical in demonstrating that Sea turbines can be deployed without harm to sea mammals.
