Own work<\/a>, CC BY-SA 4.0,<\/em> <!--more--><\/h6>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 regarded as one of the best examples of Victorian restoration\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>The Evening Standard<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>Plans for a \u00a31.5bn hotel and office block development that would fund a \u201ccost free\u201d upgrade of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/liverpool-street\">Liverpool Street\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/station\">station<\/a> were unveiled on Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sellar, the developer of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/shard\">Shard<\/a>, wants to build a 16-storey tower block on top of the historic mainline station.<\/p>\n<p>But it faces a battle with conservationists who are alarmed at the potential impact on the Grade II listed station, its \u201cspectacular\u201d glass roof and the former Great Eastern railway hotel, now the Andaz hotel&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>The station, which dates to 1874, was reopened by the Queen in 1991 after a six-year modernisation that was regarded as one of the best examples of Victorian restoration.<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool Street was the third busiest station in London pre-pandemic, with 67 million passenger journeys a year, according to official data&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>Historic England, the conservation watchdog, is giving \u201cpre-application advice\u201d to the developer and checking whether the station\u2019s listed status needed to be updated.<\/p>\n<p>The Victorian Society has asked Historic England to upgrade the station to Grade II* status, which could offer greater protection.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/london\/liverpool-street-station-hotel-office-block-plan-shard-developer-london-b1030646.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more&#8230;.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sellar, the developer of the Shard, wants to build a 16-storey tower block on top of the historic mainline Liverpool Street station. image: By Amakuru &#8211;
