and has recently been put up for sale.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Now part of the A59, the road runs for about a mile through Vauxhall and into the city centre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">It took its name from the original stagecoach route it was once part of and remains one of the city&#8217;s busiest thoroughfares.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">However, the area around it has been in steady decline since the 1960s, when rehousing and road development schemes started a population decline that saw residency fall by 67% in 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Previously surrounded by rows upon rows of tenements, ice cream parlours, tailors, grocers, pubs and cinemas and a stone&#8217;s throw from the childhood home of one of the city&#8217;s most famous daughters, Cilla Black, the Throstles Nest is now a lone outpost from a bygone era&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Landlord Kevin McMullen, who has owned the pub for 40 years, has vivid memories of its heyday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You wouldn&#8217;t be able to see the door for people,&#8221; the 78-year-old said&#8230;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-dm4ypg-ComponentWrapper-HeadlineComponentWrapper egtrm1f0\" data-component=\"subheadline-block\">\n<h2 id=\"Scotland-Road\" class=\"ssrcss-y2fd7s-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span role=\"text\">Scotland Road<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"unordered-list-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1o5f7ft-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>Scotland Road was built in the 18th Century as a new route to the north, one of two original turnpike roads out of Liverpool<\/li>\n<li>It became the focal point of Irish immigration and in 1847 and 1848, 300,000 Irish people came across a 12-month period&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Peter Leeson, who quit Liverpool City Council&#8217;s planning department in the 1960s after becoming disillusioned with the direction it was taking, said the impact of &#8220;horrifying&#8221; rehousing and road development schemes had a huge impact on the north of the city&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool City Council&#8217;s Deputy Mayor Jane Corbett&#8230;.said her predecessors &#8220;didn&#8217;t get everything right&#8221; when it came to town planning&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Like the deputy mayor, Auxiliary Bishop Williams said he also remained optimistic about the area&#8217;s future&#8230;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-11r1m41-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;Hopefully, a younger man will have a go,&#8221;
