{"id":3485,"date":"2011-12-16T16:10:07","date_gmt":"2011-12-16T16:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=3485"},"modified":"2011-12-16T16:10:07","modified_gmt":"2011-12-16T16:10:07","slug":"a-new-champion-for-the-uk%e2%80%99s-maritime-heritage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=3485","title":{"rendered":"A new champion for the UK\u2019s maritime heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_2_0_1_1324051639646116\"><span id=\"yui_3_2_0_1_1324051639646110\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Two organisations devoted to the protection of historic vessels throughout the UK will shortly combine as The Maritime Trust will join forces with Heritage Afloat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Maritime Trust was established in 1969 in response to concerns at the steady loss of the nation\u2019s historic vessels, while Heritage Afloat was established in 1994 to speak collectively for the owners and operators of historic ships.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, continued operation offers the best prospect of survival for historic ships and boats. Heritage Afloat has successfully resisted the closure and redevelopment of historic docks and slipways needed by such vessels for periodic maintenance. It also represents the UK at European Maritime Heritage, which campaigns at European-level for freedom for operators of historic vessels to earn their upkeep costs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The combined organisation will adopt the title of Maritime Heritage Trust, and will have charitable status. It will encourage the formation of regional sections, the first of which covers Wales, where a major interpretive campaign called \u2018Wales and the Sea\u2019 will begin in early 2012, culminating with Cardiff County Council\u2019s hosting of an international conference in October 2012 on the role of maritime heritage as an economic driver.
