{"id":34739,"date":"2022-10-28T17:48:57","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T16:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=34739"},"modified":"2022-10-28T17:48:57","modified_gmt":"2022-10-28T16:48:57","slug":"ihbc-student-award-judge-welcomed-icomos-uk-president-clara-arokiasamy-obe-to-select-next-gus-astley-winner-500-swansea-school-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=34739","title":{"rendered":"IHBC Student Award judge welcomed: ICOMOS-UK President Clara Arokiasamy OBE to select next \u2018Gus Astley\u2019 winner &#8211; \u00a3500 &#038; Swansea School 2023!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-34740\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ClaraArokiasamyPresidentICOMOS_UK.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"287\" \/>The IHBC is delighted to welcome Clara Arokiasamy, President of ICOMOS-UK, as the guest judge on the 2021 IHBC <a href=\"http:\/\/gasa.ihbc.org.uk\/\">Gus Astley Student Award<\/a>, with winners receiving certificates and cash prizes up to \u00a3500 plus a free place at the IHBC\u2019s 2023 Swansea School (21-24 June).<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026the fifteenth year we have run these prestigious conservation awards\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Clara Arokiasamy said: \u2018I am honoured and delighted to judge the 2022 Gus Astley Student Award.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Commitment to developing and maintaining good practice and standards in conservation is at the heart of our two organisations, IHBC and ICOMOS-UK.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The impact of climate change, the need to decolonise the interpretation of our historic environment and the need to involve our communities in conservation are some of the key issues that we are faced with currently.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 I commend the IHBC\u2019s effort to promote new thinking and ideas among students\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\u2018The education sector through its students plays a vital role in identifying solutions to these challenges and I commend the IHBC\u2019s effort to promote new thinking and ideas among students through its Gus Astley Student Award.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I am very much looking forward to reading the submissions over the coming weeks and months.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Chris Wood, Chair of the IHBC\u2019s Education Committee said: \u2018Clara\u2019s agreement to serve as the Institute\u2019s Guest Judge for the 2020 Awards is very good news indeed.\u00a0 Her leading role with ICOMOS-UK as well as her strong and long-standing professional connections to the sector will ensure a thorough and informed review of the submissions \u2013 so good luck to her, and to all those submitting\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Bob Kindred, IHBC\u2019s lead adviser on the Gus Astley Awards, said: \u2018I am delighted that Clara will be our guest judge for the awards in the forthcoming year.\u00a0 The role of ICOMOS is a impressive one across the sector in the UK and internationally and I\u2019m sure Clara will find selecting commended entries and a winner a rewarding task.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This will be the fifteenth year we have run these prestigious conservation awards and we are very pleased yet again to have received submissions to an impressively high standard.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The winner and all the other successful shortlisted candidates will receive their prizes at the IHBC\u2019s 2023 School in Swansea and I look forward to meeting them there.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In conversation with past Award recipients, I know that offering the shortlisted student nominees a place at the Annual School is a great incentive to participate. It is also one of the best ways for us to help them in the formative stages of their careers and experience the wide range of work done by the Institute\u2019s members.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Clara Arokiasamy OBE:<\/p>\n<p>Clara is the President of ICOMOS-UK and the Chair of its Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee which she founded in 2012. Her involvement, as a senior manager and non-executive member, in the planning and delivery of arts and heritage services in the UK spans local government, community sector, and Non-Government Departments, over a period of 30 years. She was Deputy Director Operations at the Heritage Lottery Fund, a member of the Culture Committee at the UK National Commission for UNESCO, Vice President of the International Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage at ICOMOS International and a member of the Strategic Review Committee at ICOM International. She also chaired the London Mayor\u2019s Heritage and Diversity Task Force and the Open University\u2019s research board on Cultural Rights and Kenya\u2019s New Constitution.
