(4 of 7), CC BY 2.0, <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=22407162\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 if they pose an immediate safety risk they may be carefully laid down\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>The Scarborough News<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>In June of this year, Scarborough Borough Council announced a safety audit of headstones in three Scarborough cemeteries and one Whitby cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Some gravestones &#8211; deemed unsafe by the inspectors &#8211; have even had to be laid flat on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>However, in recent days there have been a number of concerns from residents, while the story has also been covered in national newspapers and on the BBC Radio 2 Jeremy Vine show.<\/p>\n<p>These concerns covered a lack of communication, repair fees and the sensitivity of the audit.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Scarborough Borough Council said: \u201cA sensitive audit of memorial headstones in our three cemeteries to check they are stable and don\u2019t pose a safety risk&#8230; is continuing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo headstones have been damaged by our staff and contractors.
