The UK\u2019s most inclusive conservation award for students, the Institute of Historic Building Conservation\u2019s (IHBC) annual Gus Astley Student Award, is ready for online submissions at http:\/\/gasa.ihbc.org.uk\/<\/a>, with a closing date of 31 July 2012<\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Taught course tutors, leaders and directors across a wide range of disciplines, from history to regeneration, are encouraged to raise awareness within their student bodies of this prestigious awarding opportunity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jo Evans, IHBC Chair, said: \u2018Our Student Award is crucially important for the IHBC, and for the heritage conservation industry as a whole.\u00a0 It highlights the best of the diverse professions and career routes that underpin successful conservation \u2013 from engineering to history and from young students to established professionals modernising their skills.\u2019<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Students need only submit digital versions of their course work from 2011 or 2012 for a chance to win a \u00a3300 cash prize, and\/or a free place at the IHBC\u2019s Annual School, to be held in Winchester in June 2012. \u00a0Those keen to test their course work are encouraged to plan for their submissions now, or to make them if their relevant course work is complete.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Gus Astley Student Award is presented each year for taught course work that is considered by IHBC\u2019s guest judge to be of exceptional value to the sector.\u00a0 Each year IHBC selects a leading practitioner with a major employer a the judge, including previously officers from Historic Scotland, English Heritage, Cadw.\u00a0 The judge for 2011 is Rory Cullen, Head of Buildings at the National Trust.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Course work may deal with any aspect of places, buildings, features or areas that may shape conservation advice, including history, heritage and planning, new architecture or investigative research.\u00a0 There are no restrictions on discipline, taught course, group numbers or age, while anyone finishing courses in the academic years of 2011 or 2012 is eligible.\u00a0 The IHBC Student Award website gives full details on the process and terms of the award, including how to submit digitally in accordance with our guidelines.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As well as the \u00a3300 cash prize, and occasional additional awards for commended work, successful candidates may be offered free places at the IHBC\u2019s major training event, its Annual School.\u00a0 In 2011 four students were offered opportunities to attend in Llandudno on 16-18 June, and with attendees receiving their prizes during the IHBC\u2019s Annual School Dinner, sponsored by Welsh Slate.<\/p>\n
