She came to the throne at the age of 25 in 1952, when Britain was still experiencing rationing, and bombsites pockmarked the nation’s great cities….

The years since Elizabeth’s ascendancy to the throne have been marked by periods of confidence and then crushing bouts of national self-doubt…

The same might be said of British architecture, which has seen huge ideological and stylistic changes during Elizabeth’s reign. In 1952 architecture was stuck in a strange limbo, not entirely sure of what to make of the rapidly changing international context, or international modernism.

Perhaps it was the Festival of Britain, which had taken place in the summer of 1951, that helped to transform popular perceptions of what architecture and design might be in the postwar era. Over the following decades a restrained neo-Georgian influenced style gave way to the strident modernism of the 1960s and 70s…..

#IHBC25

As IHBC marks a quarter of a century since our incorporation as a professional body supporting and accrediting built and historic environment conservation specialists send us your ideas on how to mark this special year!

See more on #IHBC25 and/or email ideas to Jude at support@ihbc.org.uk

For more on HESPR and how to become a HESPR member see hespr.ihbc.org.uk

Download the HESPR flyer

Download sample weekly alert

For a free promotion of your tendering opportunities and work needs to the IHBC’s HESPR members, please send details and links to Joanna at contact@ihbc.org.uk, as soon as possible.

Tenders can also be advertised for a fee with IHBC Jobs etc, including a targeted email to 2500+ recipients as well as full coverage on our NewsBlog alerts and social platforms (membership and followers c.25,000) and websites with c. 250,000 visits a month.
