Alan Turing &#8211; age 16 by Unknown author, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons<\/em><br \/>\n<em>https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/a\/a1\/Alan_Turing_Aged_16.jpg<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 commemoration of the mathematician\u2026.was \u2018long overdue\u2019\u2026<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Cambridge Independent<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>King\u2019s College has been given planning permission to install a sculpture commemorating the wartime codebreaker Alan Turing within its grounds, but some city councillors argued it should be in full public view.<\/p>\n<p>Historic England also raised concerns over the impact of the sculpture, designed by Sir Antony Gormley, on the historic setting of the University of Cambridge college.<\/p>\n<p>Standing at more than 3.6 metres and made of 19 steel blocks, the permanent installation will be placed next to the Wilkins Building.<\/p>\n<p>It means it will be visible to those at the college and to visitors, including those with a Cambridge residents\u2019 card and those paying the \u00a310 entry charge at King\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The college said a commemoration of the mathematician &#8211; famed for his role in cracking the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgeindependent.co.uk\/news\/spy-agency-gchq-releases-its-hardest-puzzle-ever-to-celebrat-9192476\/\">Germans\u2019 Enigma code<\/a> during the Second World War &#8211; was \u201clong overdue\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A representative from the college committee behind it told the city council\u2019s planning committee on Wednesday (August 3): \u201cTuring, perhaps King\u2019s most famous alumnus, is known for his groundbreaking work in computing, mathematics, mathematical biology and code-breaking at Bletchley\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said it had a \u201csculptural presence\u201d but was without a plinth and \u201cmodest enough in scale\u201d to feel human.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGormley wishes it to stand at the heart of the college community &#8211;
