\"\"It is with great sadness that the Society has learned of the death of Dr Mark Girouard, architectural historian and a founder of the Victorian Society.<\/h3>\n

\u2026 a social and architectural historian of the first rank\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

The Victorian Society writes:<\/p>\n

\u2026In addition to being a social and architectural historian of the first rank, Mark had a hand in the formation of the Victorian Society, and was present at the meeting on 25th February 1958 at Linley Sambourne House at which the Society was formally established.<\/p>\n

Over the course of the next sixty years, he produced an extraordinarily rich and varied volume of writing \u2013 with topics ranging from Elizabethan architecture and Victorian pubs to James Stirling \u2013 including seminal works on country houses, the Queen Anne Movement and urban development.<\/p>\n

Mark\u2019s contribution to architectural scholarship has been immense and he leaves a legacy of inestimable value. His passing is a profound loss indeed.<\/p>\n

The Trustees of the Victorian Society are immensely grateful to Mark for everthing he has done for the Society and extend their sympathy and condolences to his family.<\/p>\n
