The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), the UK\u2019s professional body for built and historic environment conservation specialists, is piloting a new Full Member Application Form to further help support appropriate professional accreditation in the increasingly specialised field of conservation.<\/span><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

A long process of debate and consultation across the organisation’s membership, Branches and Committees has resulted in a re-designed form that is clearer and offers more specific advice on how best to complete the various sections.<\/p>\n

Paul Butler, Chair of the IHBC\u2019s Membership and Ethics\u00a0(M&E)\u00a0Committee, said:\u00a0 \u2018A concern in the past has been that whilst \u00a0applicants might be qualified to meet the demanding criteria set by the Institute for membership, this wasn\u2019t always sufficiently well demonstrated in their application.\u00a0 The new guidance at the beginning of each section should make it clearer how their competence can be demonstrated to the assessors.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Other minor changes have been made to the form as well, primarily designed to make the form look and work better.\u00a0 But as ever any further feedback from members and applicants is welcome.\u2019<\/p>\n

Paul Butler also said: \u2018We hope the new form will encourage Affiliates to apply for full membership.\u00a0 The bar to becoming a Full Member has been, and remains very high \u2013 underpinned both by the internationally recognised conservation training standards of ICOMOS and project development models of the World Bank – but the expectations are now clearer and this should help\u2019.<\/p>\n

Jo Evans, Chair of the IHBC and former Chair of the M&E Committee said:\u00a0\u2018The strength of the IHBC results from its highly qualified and professional membership.\u00a0 Being a Full Member is a significant badge of both ability and commitment to conservation in its widest terms.\u00a0 We hope many people \u2013 both Affiliates and others \u2013 will become full members of an Institute that is playing an increasingly prominent and significant role in conservation across the UK.\u2019<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sean O\u2019Reilly, IHBC Director, said: \u2018This additional, and indeed optional, guidance sits above our robust standards and disciplinary processes.\u00a0\u00a0 Now we can encourage long-standing Affiliates to progress to the professional membership envisaged by them and anticipated by us.\u00a0 In the coming months we will contact relevant Affiliates and ask them to progress their application.\u2019<\/p>\n
