{"id":3344,"date":"2011-11-04T16:08:31","date_gmt":"2011-11-04T16:08:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=3344"},"modified":"2011-11-04T16:08:31","modified_gmt":"2011-11-04T16:08:31","slug":"ihbc%e2%80%99s-student-award-2011-judge-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=3344","title":{"rendered":"IHBC\u2019s Student Award 2011: Judge announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"yui_3_2_0_1_13204025594691597\"><strong id=\"yui_3_2_0_1_13204025594691591\"><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), the professional body for built and historic environment conservation specialists, has announced the appointment of the guest judge for its 2011 Gus Astley Student Awards, Rory Cullen, Head of Buildings at the National Trust and member of IHBC and CIOB.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rory Cullen said of his appointment: \u2018I&#8217;m extremely keen to promote training &amp; development in any form of conservation skills within the Trust, &amp; delighted to be able to undertake this role for the IHBC.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Gus Astley Award is one of a number of IHBC innovations in recent years, like its \u2018NewsBlog\u2019.\u00a0 Together these have become great tools to keep the National Trust&#8217;s \u00a0staff abreast of courses and educational trends, as well as providing key information everyone needs to be aware of\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There were 51 entries to the 2011 award, with contestants ranging from undergraduates learning about historic places to later-career architects honing skills in understanding places.\u00a0 It is intended that the winners of the 2011 awards will be announced early in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Biographical note on Rory Cullen: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rory Cullen is Head of Buildings at the National Trust, a post he has held for ten years. This national role involves writing policies and guidance on building conservation issues and overseeing the training and development\u00a0of over a hundred Building Surveyors and a hundred and fifty skilled Direct Labour craftsmen, to ensure the highest conservation standards are maintained and shared. It also involves frequent external liaison with Government bodies, conservation organisations and the general public.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rory started his career as an Assistant Estates Manager at a university, and has also been a Conservation Officer as well as the Building Manager at Stowe Landscape Gardens.
