Controversial plans for a Holocaust Memorial designed by Adjaye Associates and Ron Arad received a major blow last week, after a High Court judge quashed planning permission.<\/p>\n

A law dating back to 1900, the judge said, had not been properly considered in the planning inquiry \u2013 yet it should have been a crucial factor in the debate about the future of the public park where the memorial would be built.<\/p>\n

The court action was brought by the London Historic Parks and Garden Trust, which along with other campaign groups has long argued that the Grade II-listed Victoria Tower Gardens, on the bank of the Thames by the Palace of Westminster, is the wrong place for the development.<\/p>\n

The ruling comes after years of wrangling. It has been eight years since then prime minister David Cameron investigated how the nation should commemorate the Holocaust; six years since the site was announced; and five years since Adjaye and Arad won a major international competition to design the scheme.<\/p>\n
