It\u2019s funny how familiar places can suddenly take on a new significance \u2013 as an Oxford student in the mid-1980s I occasionally visited St. Catherine\u2019s College but, like most young undergrads, spared no thought for its architecture or creator.<\/p>\n

Nova et Vetera<\/em> is the college\u2019s motto, \u2018Things both old and new\u2019. It was built in 1962 by the radical Danish architect Arne Jacobsen. Colloquially known simply as \u2018Catz\u2019, it\u2019s now quite rightly a Grade One listed structure and interior.<\/p>\n

Visitors will also notice that the college now boasts an arresting and bold new \u00a310m circular Graduate Centre, and an extension to the existing student accommodation pavilions. This latest addition \u2013 designed by Purcell Architects \u2013 provides a complementary accompaniment to Jacobsen\u2019s original campus design and Manchester-based Stephen Hodder\u2019s later phases of development…<\/p>\n

\u2018Jacobsen used pure form geometries consistently throughout the design,\u2019 said Nicola Hewes, Regional Partner at Purcell.<\/p>\n

\u2018The music house is a plan form of two intersecting octagons, the gymnasium is a pure square, the cycle store is a cylindrical building and thus we designed the new Graduate Centre floor plan as a circle\u2019.<\/p>\n
