{"id":32851,"date":"2022-03-22T16:55:32","date_gmt":"2022-03-22T16:55:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=32851"},"modified":"2022-03-22T16:55:32","modified_gmt":"2022-03-22T16:55:32","slug":"ihbc-signpost-to-2021-research-economic-social-environmental-benefits-of-stimulating-repairs-etc-in-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=32851","title":{"rendered":"IHBC signpost to 2021 research: Economic, social &#038; environmental benefits of stimulating repairs etc. in Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-32852\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Benefits_Repairs_Strathclyde_Uni_220322.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"277\" \/>A 2021 report by the University of Strathclyde Fraser of Allander Institute analysed the economic, social and environmental benefits of stimulating repairs and improvements to the Scottish built environment.<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026 repair and improvement activities \u2013 generates the biggest economic impact\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The Fraser of Allander Institute writes:<\/p>\n<p>The construction sector is an important contributor to the Scottish economy \u2013 directly supporting \u00a38.5bn in Scottish GVA and supporting over 170,000 full-time equivalent jobs in the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Once spill over effects are accounted for, we find that the sector supports almost \u00a316bn in Scottish GVA and almost 300,000 full-time equivalent jobs across the Scottish economy.<\/p>\n<p>According to the ONS\u2019 UK SIC 2007, the construction sector (SIC41-43) is made up of the following industries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Construction of buildings (SIC 41);<\/li>\n<li>Civil engineering (SIC 42); and,<\/li>\n<li>Specialised construction activities (SIC 43).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Specialised construction activities includes repair and maintenance and home improvements work. Repair work and home improvements, i.e. repair work to bring a house to standards or energy efficient improvements, are more common for older properties. Modern properties (i.e. built post- 1982) are typically more energy efficient and require less repair work.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main purposes of this report is to understand the differential economic multiplier effects of different construction activity with a particular focus on SIC 43. The Scottish Government\u2019s input- output tables, used for such multiplier analysis, aggregates SIC 41-43 therefore, this research involved splitting the tables into a larger table which disaggregates the construction sector.<\/p>\n<p>The results indicate that \u2013<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Within the construction sector, specialised construction activities \u2013 which includes repair and improvement activities \u2013 generates the biggest economic impact of the three construction industries. Both in terms of GVA impact and employment impact.
