The IHBC\u2019s 2022\u00a0Aberdeen School<\/a>\u00a0conference looks at \u2018Heritage on the Edge\u2019.\u00a0 It examines how practitioners and stakeholders can and should manage change to the most challenging of heritage.\u00a0 That heritage may be \u2018on the edge\u2019 for any of many reasons, including geography, technology, changing taste, new environmental awareness\u00a0etc.<\/em><\/p>\n

We are delighted that\u00a0Griff Rhys Jones<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 President of the\u00a0Victorian Society<\/a>, among his many other roles \u2013\u00a0 will explore the challenges of conserving Victorian and other heritage that is\u00a0 \u2018on the edge\u2019, in a recorded conversation with the IHBC\u2019s Chair David McDonald.\u2019<\/p>\n

IHBC Director Sean O\u2019Reilly said: \u2018Almost from the start Victorian architecture has been on the edge \u2013 of taste, of engineering, of social progress and more \u2013 so Griff\u2019s practical perspective offers an excellent start to the day, for in-person and virtual delegates alike.\u2019<\/p>\n

‘\u2026 conservation is about the future, and that conservation is there \u2018to help manage change….’<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n

Griff Rhys Jones said: \u2018I wrote in my introduction to the\u00a0IHBC\u2019s 2020\u00a0Yearbook<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0\u2018I believe more than anything that\u00a0<\/em>conservation is about the future\u2019,\u00a0<\/em>and that conservation is there \u2018to help manage change<\/em>.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018I am delighted to explore these matters further in conversation with the IHBC, and help shape discussions at its\u00a02022 Aberdeen School<\/a>\u00a0in June.\u2019<\/p>\n

IHBC\u2019s Chair David McDonald said: \u2018I\u2019m really looking forward to my visit to the \u2018Granite City\u2019, not only because I\u2019m Scottish, but also because there will be much for us to learn about heritage protection and practice \u2018on the edge\u2019.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018While we have had two very successful virtual annual schools in 2020 and 2021, it is exciting to be having an in-person event this year. I look forward to meeting those delegates who can make to Aberdeen and sharing the experience with those who attend online.\u2019<\/p>\n

IHBC writes:<\/p>\n

The final details of our hybrid 2022 School programme are still being planned.\u00a0 Clearly, as we all contend with the legacy, logistics and variables of the pandemic, the IHBC needs to have flexibility as much as learning and accessibility at the heart of our planning.<\/p>\n

In response, trustees have agreed that as things stand we need to limit in-person attendance very carefully.\u00a0 School places for delegates attending \u2018in person\u2019 are very restricted, and allocated on a \u2018first booking\u2019 basis.\u00a0 However this is more than compensated for by the open access and low costs access offered to our \u2018Virtual delegates\u2019 attending online.<\/p>\n

Those coming to Aberdeen to attend the Full School programme \u2013 from 16 June \u2013 can join the Friday Day School \u2018in-person\u2019, as well as day tours on Thursday and Saturday, and our annual dinner \u2013 supported by Aberdeen City Council \u2013 and a Thursday evening drinks reception.\u00a0 Day School in-person attendance on 17 June is limited to the day programme with no dinner, reception or other options.<\/p>\n

As places are necessarily extremely limited, booking early is critical.\u00a0 Also, Full School delegates this year must arrange their own accommodation.\u00a0 So, as refunds are even more restricted for 2022, before committing to the costs of a Full School place, please do consider carefully what delegate options suit you best, as regards travel and accommodation options, costs, prospects of programme cancelation and change\u00a0etc.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018And don\u2019t forget that both virtual and in-person delegates are invited to the IHBC\u2019s learning-led and\u00a0virtual School Heritage MarketPlace<\/a>, on Wednesday afternoon and evening.\u2019<\/p>\n
