It has already mapped over 60% of the UK\u2019s underground assets\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>New Civil Engineer<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>The Geospatial Commission&#8217;s NUAR is a project being headed up by Atkins, in collaboration with Ordnance Survey and 1Spatial, that aims to map the entirety of the UK\u2019s underground utility assets. The main purpose is to reduce the number of accidental strikes, which the commission says costs \u00a32.4bn annually.<\/p>\n<p>It has already spent \u00a323M of taxpayer money on hiring Atkins and \u00a34M on pilot programmes. Other associated costs such as staff salaries take this figure above \u00a330M. In an article published on Utility Week, Atkins divisional digital director and NUAR programme director Guy Ledger said \u201cWe\u2019ll look back in five or 10 years and think \u2018why wasn\u2019t this done before?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it has been done before.<\/p>\n<p>There is a company called Linesearch BeforeUDig (LSBUD) that has been working in the industry for two decades and has 100 members across industries \u2013 including Shell, BP, National Grid, SES Water and Gigaclear, to name a handful. It has already mapped over 60% of the UK\u2019s underground assets, including roughly 90% of gas and electricity networks and almost 100% of high pressure pipeline networks.
