{"id":32532,"date":"2022-02-15T18:06:40","date_gmt":"2022-02-15T18:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsblogsnew.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=32532"},"modified":"2022-02-15T18:06:40","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T18:06:40","slug":"ihbc-features-heritage-from-the-doorstep-work-starts-on-new-lidl-inside-historic-former-liverpool-cinema-saved-from-demolition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=32532","title":{"rendered":"IHBC features \u2018Heritage from the doorstep\u2019: Work starts on new Lidl inside historic former Liverpool cinema saved from demolition"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/8\/86\/Abbey_cinema%2C_Wavertree.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-32533\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Former_Abbey_Cinema_Wavertree_Phil_Nash_from_Wikimedia_Commons.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>Work appears to have started on a former cinema in Wavertree which was branded an \u2018increasingly rare survivor\u2019, according to <em>The Liverpool Echo.<\/em><\/h3>\n<h6><em>image: Former Abbey Cinema Wavertree &#8211; By Phil Nash from Wikimedia Commons CC BY-SA 4.0 &amp; GFDLViews, Attribution, via Wikimedia Commons<\/em><\/h6>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u2026landmark site &#8211; which featured in the original draft lyrics to The Beatles song In My Life\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em>The Liverpool Echo<\/em> writes:<\/p>\n<p>Last year, supermarket Lidl announced its intention to tear down the former\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/lidl-plan-demolish-picture-palace-20338995\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"Follow noopener\" data-content-type=\"news\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\">Abbey Cinema<\/a>\u00a0building on Church Road North in Wavertree, which was deemed to be &#8220;beyond economic repair.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This was to make way for a new store to be built there.<\/p>\n<p>However, after rallying public support, Historic England, the public body which protects old buildings, officially recommended the landmark site &#8211; which featured it the original draft lyrics to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/mayor-joe-anderson-warns-famous-18773655\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"Follow noopener\" data-content-type=\"news\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\">The Beatles<\/a>\u00a0song In My Life &#8211; for a Grade II level listing.<\/p>\n<p>This means it cannot be demolished.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns were raised when signs were put up on the former picture palace, saying &#8220;demolition in progress&#8221;, as work appears to be carried out.<\/p>\n<p>But the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow noopener\" data-content-type=\"section\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\">ECHO<\/a>\u00a0understands this is not demolition work, instead it is renovation work inside the building itself.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Charlesworth, Listing Adviser at Historic England previously said: &#8220;The Abbey is an increasingly rare survivor from the 1930s heyday of cinema, designed by the Liverpudlian architect Alfred Shennan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The building\u2019s striking internationally-influenced architecture and the many special features of its interior design, including its wooden mosaic flooring and shell-like ceiling domes, will now be protected for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Abbey has proved to be versatile enough to serve a range of purposes since it closed as a cinema, so we hope that the owner and the local community will now come together to find a sustainable new use for this remarkable building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After news the building was saved from demolition, ECHO readers were quick to have their say.<\/p>\n<p>One reader said: &#8220;You can&#8217;t knock it down it&#8217;s a landmark been there forever its Wavertree&#8217;s front door.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another wrote: &#8220;Well done to the action committee.
