A tunnel that has been disused since the 1960s could become Europe\u2019s longest underground cycle lane.<\/p>\n

The two-mile-long Victorian tunnel was built in 1890, connecting the Rhondda and Afan valleys to transport coal to Swansea Bay….<\/p>\n

Campaigners want to re-open the tunnel to make it the longest underground cycle lane in Europe.<\/p>\n

Despite its location in Wales, the tunnel is owned and controlled by National Highways, formerly Highways England, but Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said….he will hand over control to Welsh ownership to allow the project to continue….<\/p>\n

Rhondda MP Chris Bryant said: “If we are able to reopen it as a cycle path, as many people hope, it would be the longest cycle path in Europe.<\/p>\n

“It would be a major local attraction, which would be good for tourism and jobs in an area of outstanding beauty that unfortunately has terrible financial deprivation.”<\/p>\n
