The charity reports that \u201cdecisive action\u201d and use of government schemes mean it is in a relatively strong position for the future.<\/p>\n<p>English Heritage was established as a charity in April 2015, receiving a one-off \u00a380m grant&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>The government also provided an annual subsidy that tapered off over seven years and amounted to \u00a389m to help the new charity become sustainable.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Decisive action\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>English Heritage reported an overall income of \u00a399.8m, against a launch plan target of \u00a3113.7m, largely caused by the site closures during lockdowns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year provided an enormous challenge to our financial sustainability,\u201d the accounts say. \u201cHowever, we were able to end the year in a relatively strong position, with a trading surplus of \u00a314.4m.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>English Heritage received a \u00a312.6m rescue grant from the government and a \u00a323.4m loan from a scheme administered by Arts Council England.<\/p>\n<p>Visitor numbers fell to 1.9 million people, from 6.2 million the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Membership accounts for \u00a337.4m of its income and the charity ended the year with just over one million members.
